Setting to toggle monitor on/off

I thought I recall a setting where when Cubase is in record mode the monitor is engaged yet when Cubase is not recording it is disengaged. I can’t quite seem to find that setting but recall it was something like tape machine style recording?

More specifically it’s (bizarrely) under the VST heading in Preferences. The Auto Monitoring drop-down should be set to “Tape Machine Style” as you correctly remembered.

Thank you Planachist! Much appreciated! I had been through the preferences list several times today and thought it’s so unlikely that it would be in the VST area as well.
