I am typesetting a string quartet and need to input morendo. I have been inputting it as suffix to whatever dynamic that particular part was at before and ticking “Hide intensity marking” in the properties panel. In rehearsal today I discovered that in the parts the P still shows while it is hidden in the score. It is quite annoying to have to go through the parts to repeat the corrections I have already done in the score. I’m clearly missing something here - I don’t believe Dorico should work that way. How do I get my changes to show up in the parts without having to repeat the changes?
In the Properties panel, when you make a change that you want to see in both the score and the parts, make sure you have “Set local properties” set to “Globally”. If it’s set to “Locally”, then changes to local properties will only be reflected in the current layout.

Some properties are only global and are not affected by this setting. You can see which are which by toggling this setting:
![]()
I first tried the OP dynamics with the properties set local. Of course it still showed the dynamic marking. Then I changed the properties to globally and it still showed the dynamic marking. It was only when I deleted the original dynamic and suffix and re-entered it with the globally setting on that only the morendo showed in the parts. I’m not sure if this is expected behavior or what, but it is interesting.
Changing the Locally/Globally toggle only affects properties that you set afterwards, not ones that are already set.
So if you turn on “Hide intensity marking” with the toggle set to Locally, then the property is only set locally. Changing the toggle to Globally then has no effect on this. But with the toggle set to Globally, you can turn the property off and then back on – and now it’s set globally.
Isn’t it so that if you select all dynamics and activate Propagate Properties, the changes will appear globally even if you previously had the Properties Panel set to Locally?
Thank you - got it now I think. I never really paid attention to the local/global settings before (never had any issues). But I noticed now that when I do what you describe the Hide Intensity Marking setting is now disappearing from the panel when Show Local Only is selected. So by setting a local property globally it gets reclassified to be a global property?
It’s still a bit confusing why some properties can be either global or local while others are always global - I’m trying to make sense of it: The suffix itself for example seems to always be a global property. But hiding the P can be either local or global. I can’t think of a situation where I would want to hide a dynamic in the score but not in the parts - or vice versa (give the violas a PPP but don’t tell the conductor….).
Is there a way I can set the default for “set local properties” to be “Globally”? I think that would make most sense to me since I’m always working in the score. Then I can switch to local setting on the few - if any - situations where I would need it.
Anyway we had a good discussion in the rehearsal yesterday on interpreting what it means when there is a long note tied over several bars marked PP dim. and a few bars later P morendo. Should that be subito louder? Finally when looking in the score I understood that it was a typesetting error ![]()
Yes, that’s another way of doing things if you need to operate on a number of objects or properties.
Generally speaking, yes. Personally, I don’t like this part of how Dorico functions; I think there should be a difference between a global property and a local property which is set everywhere the same.
Yes, in Preferences > Note Input and Editing.
Thanks!
