Share audio and midi ports across external instruments (and normal audio channels)

Hi all,

Hoping someone can confirm if this functionality is in Cubase 14 Pro.

I want to setup my 16 i/o audio channels as audio in/out available to audio channels. I also want to setup external instruments and fx assigmed to the same 16i/o… some of these may share midi ports.

The intent is that im quite happy to physically patch things in and out via patchbays, but its just unbearable having to also reassign audio in/out settings in cubase everytime i change my setup around or want to try a different external device.

Im cubase 12 currently, and this is not possible for me currently.

Cubase 14 features suggests “external devices can now share device ports” or something like that… but its not clear on whether this is midi ports only, or ALSO audio channel assignments.

Id love to just setup every synth and drum machine how id like so when i physically patch them in i can insert a new ext instr. Channel and theyre ready to go… if another device is in the project i can render in place or disable if needed. I dont want swtting up of external instruments to disconnect routing for audio channels or other synths/drum machines… im quite capable of understanding what is plugged in myself :)…

Really, no input!?

Ill simplify:

In audio connections in cubase 14 can i setup:

*One stereo external instrument on inputs 1/2
*One mono synth “external instrument” on just input 1
*And two audio inputs also on those same two channels for e.g. mics

And then choose when to use them?

Or will cubase always ask to disconnect a used audio input if i create the first option above, and then any other of that list?

In cubase 12 it disconnects when i reuse an audio slot. I get why, but its still stupid and annoying. Im hoping they’ve changed that.

Selecting duplicate ins or outs across all the connections tabs does not give the port in use error so looks like this was changed.

Amazing. Thanks very much for taking the time to check!

Actually I’ve had a bit of a facepalm moment… Of COURSE I can just demo C14 lol :-/

For some reason I thought I was stuck with upgrading and finding out. No idea why I felt that way.

Anyway, thanks again.

The great news is that I’ve just done a fairly thorough test, and it’s one of those rare moments where Cubase dev has delivered pretty much exactly what I’ve been dreaming of for years!.. I can now setup ALL of my gear ready to go without the audio connections breaking. Incredible. That means I’ve now got drum machines and modules setup to be stereo out OR I can just turn on other outputs and they’re fully multichannel when I need them to be. When they’re not multi channel, those inputs can be used for other devices I’ve set up like synthesisers and external fx and processors… and I never need to go into Audio connections and reconnect basic in/out. So good!

Best part is that I can set up e.g. a stereo synth to have a standard input, say 1/2 BUT I can also set it up to have aux input channels on any other combo of my 16ch interface. So if I’m using Ch1/2 already in a project, I just load that synth up and activate e.g. 3/4 and patch it into 3/4 in my patch bay and away we go.

Very very good stuff. It’s Chrsitmas all over again
