Shift-L is not responding, cannot enter lyrics

I’m a complete newbie on a steep learning curve.

I’m doing a number of hymns in Dorico and am alternately amazed at how easy some things are and the quality of the finished product, And just as often I’m dismayed how things don’t work, seemingly inexplicably.

I started a new hymn ( chose Choir in Setup ) added the SATB voices quite handily, but Shift-L ( or Write/Create Lyrics ) ignores me. I cannot get into Lyrics mode. All Lyrics menu choices ( Edit, Notations, Lyrics ) are greyed out. Some setting must be awry.

How can I get into Create Lyrics mode?

TIA

Welcome to the Dorico forum.

Did you select a note to start with?

Good grief, that was it. I don’t recall doing purposefully selecting a note before entering lyrics on the other three I’ve done, but I must have.

Thank you. :folded_hands:

How would Dorico know where you wanted the lyrics, unless you told it?

All the Shift-something methods of adding things to the score require something to be selected.

or the caret to be invoked (which, admittedly, means you give an extremely precise location to Dorico about where you want the thing to happen)
