Show/Hide staves without content?

Cubase has shortcuts where I can toggle tracks that have content in them (either at the cursor or anywhere). This is invaluable when working on larger compositions, especially during playback/editing.

Does Dorico not have a similar feature to show/hide staves or have I just glossed by it?

You have two routes, depending on what you want to achieve.

You can use layout options>staff visibility to hide empty staves in Page view, or you can use the instrument filter to hide instruments in Galley view.

Hi @bill0287,
see this post, for a possible workaround:

Thanks for the replies. So it seems the answer to my fundamental question is “no”. The workaround is not adequate.

In write mode, there should be a shortcut to toggle empty staves on and off at will without the need for using options or macros.

I want to hit a shortcut, hiding all the empty staves, press play, seeing only staves with music, and then stop play, and hit the shortcut again to make them visible again and start inputing more notes. Rinse and repeat 100s of times.

As it is now you have to scroll up and down too much and zoom too much to see all you want to see.

Seems like a fundamental (and easy) feature to implement.

It seems as if “Hide Empty Staves” does what you just said (rather than the title of the thread.

One can always create a parallel layout to the “show all staves” layout that hides empty staves. One click would get you there. That seems like a fundamental (and easy) solution for you to implement.

I’m not sure what your goal was in mimicking my words like that, but it’s still a “workaround” to something that could be a built in shortcut. Here’s what it took to get the behavior I wanted:

Create a new layout (copy of full score)
Set it to hide empty staves
Go to Setup and move the layout to the top of the list, below Full score layout
In Write mode, use the Next/Previous Layout shortcuts to go back and forth between layouts

Repeat this setup for EVERY score.

One click, huh?

As I said, it would be nice if there was a universal shortcut for this.

You could use the Jump bar for this – in Commands mode, type “hide empty staves” and you’ll have the option there in front of you.
