Showcase a new composition as a video created in Dorico

Dear friends,

I’d like to create a video to showcase a new composition, one that displays the sheet music and plays the music in time with the beat. I’d like to use Dorico to do this. Could you tell me how to go about it? I’m using a MacBook Pro. Thanks!

If you want to create a video of Dorico playing a score, you need to use a separate video capture program like OBS Studio, which is free and available for Windows or macOS.

There’s a couple of ways to do this and @johnkprice shared one. Another is an app called CleanShot X.

One can capture the video with QuickTime on a Mac, export the audio and then sync the two using iMovie without aquiring any additional software. It’s not that difficult once one plays around with it a bit.

I generally do not do a scrolling video of my new works but I use graphic files of the individual pages exported from the pdf, the exported audio and VideoPad from NCH software to marry the two into a relatively minimal size. if you want to see any of it go to https://www.composer-in-residence.com/ click on explore the music and click on any of the pieces. The page will have a video of the score and sound.

I second CleanShot X. It can record video + audio at the same time, or only video.

If you prefer to export audio separately, I usually “combine” audio and video in the software called “DaVinci Resolve”.

It is a pity that Dorico still doesn’t have this feature “built-in”, whereas MuseScore does. MuseScore Studio 4.7 can export an MP4 video of the scrolling score view with audio playback.

This has been discussed many times on this forum, so let’s hope that one day Dorico will also have it.

Yup. I’d much rather look at a well-timed, high-def slideshow than a scrolling score with a playhead. But it’s a much more manual process.

I’ve spent most of the morning trying to get this to work, but it refuses to record audio unless I use VB-Audio’s Virtual Cable. That works, but unfortunately, it has some rather odd side effects like randomly not rendering slurs and shortening notes. Not sure how an audio driver would do that, but as soon as I changed back to my regular setup, everything was fine.

Thank you so much for all the tips! I’ve now decided that the best option is to record a video of the screen using QuickTime and then merge the audio and video in iMovie. Thanks!
