I’ve created the bracket/half-note by making a new line shape and pasting a graphic half-note on top. Is there a way to make the same thing via a tuplet command or by some other more automatic means?
Here’s an example file with several lines that should do what you want. Check the Lines panel. You should be able to import them with the Library Manager or click the star icon on each to save them as default.

Thank you, Jesele. Any thought about the half-note, beyond putting it in as a graphic?
This might be a better example. Select the notes/passage and click the line under Lines in the right panel. If you open this file and then the Lines editor, you can click the star icon at the bottom left to save them as default. Then reopen your own file, and they should be there.

That’s brilliant! Thanks very much.
I use Ultra Character Map on a Mac to copy and paste the glyphs into the hyphenated text field in the Lines editor. There are many similar apps, or you can copy the codes from the SMUFL site.
