Showing assigned notes for percussion?

Hi all

I am wondering what might be the best way to provide a legend for the percussion parts;

for example telling the drum set player that C is snare, D is ride cymbal etc.

Also can you tell Dorico to indicate the name of the instrument when first sounded even if the instrument name is percission X?

Thanks

Ken

A possibility would be to create a short score with all “notes” you use for instruments on your 5 bar percussion staff and then with right click and chosing percussion from the dropdown add a legend to each of them.

Hi mavros

Thank you for replying!

I am not clear on the steps you mention what is a “short score” exactly?

Would you please explain how this is done?

Thanks and please excuse my inexperience.

Ken

Assuming you have some sort of instrumentation page, eventually combined with axtitle page or composers comments before your actual piece, I suggested to put a short percussion staff with one note for each instrument in your percussion kit with the legend.

Or see this.

Maybe not the simplest solution, but you could add a dedicated flow for this:

And create a Page Template:

For the names I used percussion legends and didn’t adjust the spacing at all, but it can be improved!

Hi Charles

That seems to be a great solution, but can it only appear in the parts and not the score?

This brings up another point of confusion for me:

How do I make changes to a part without affecting the score?

It seems in Dorico that parts are not separate files.

I remember in Finale they were, but you could also delete all the other instruments to make a part. Is this what one must do in Dorico?

There must be a way to just edit the parts, right?

Thanks for your input!

Ken

There are of course things that can’t be changed independently (like the notes and the rhythm, for example!). But part handling is very flexible, especially for anything related to layout, where the parts are completely independent from the score.

In my example above, the “Instruments” flow is shown in the part and not in the score.

You can have a look at the file here:

Showing assigned notes for percussion.dorico (552,3 Ko)

Thanks, Charles!

I will take this apart.

I wonder how you got the legends to appear,.

I suppose you first input the notes and them in the properties panel, what do you click on?

Thanks

Ken

Select a note, right-click > Percussion > Legend for selected instruments.

With a note selected, right-click->Percussion.

Hi Charles

Thanks for this help

I got this far, but I can’t get rid of the final bar

I went to notation options and selected barlines I selecetd the no barline in the end choices, but it does not eliminate the barline end as you can see.

What am I missing.

Thanks

Ken

Notation Options are per-flow. Are you sure you had the correct flow selected in Notation Options when you changed the final barline setting?

Right, Alan it worked but at the end of the whole piece!

I only want it at the top, but I guess it is not crucial.-----

Well I tried as you suggested and it worked..

Thanks

Ken

Hi Charles

So no worries

Alan helped me figure that issue out!

Thanks

Ken

I think you meant Aaron! —? :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth::wink:

I answer to lots of different things!

Hi Aaron

Well just when I think I have escaped the rabbit hole:

I added the separate instrument flow with legend to the perc part, BUT

I can’t control whether it shows up in the part only or in the score as well.

How do I only have this in the part but not the score.

I can’t delete the flow in the full score or uncheck it in fact when the flow is created there is no check box.

I looked in the manual but it is not very clear…

How do you do this so that the Instrument flow only appears in the part?

Thanks (and sorry to remain inept…)

Ken

Sorry about that…
