In a multi-movement work, with each movement being in a separate flow, I am trying to show a single multi-bar rest with the total bar count for a movement in which the instrument does not play. Unless I insert a note somewhere, or use Engrave > Split Multi-bar Rest, all I can get is TACET.
I’ve searched through as many options as I can find, with constant reference to the manual, but so far I have not been able to do it.
Engraving Options > Rests > Minimum number of bars in flow to show ‘Tacet’ will only accept up to 99. This movement is well over 100 bars long.
Unless I have missed something and there is actually a way to do it, I can settle for using Split Multi-bar Rest to divide the long rest into shorter sections (based on where rehearsal marks are).
If the player is assigned to the flow, then you should find that you get the same kinds of multi-bar rests you would get if the player had some music somewhere in the flow; you should only get the boxed “TACET” display for a player that is not assigned to the flow at all (but where the flow is assigned to the layout).
Hi Jan.
Thanks for the suggestion, but Engraving Options > Rests > Multi-bar Rests > Minimum number of bars in flow to show ‘Tacet’ will only accept up to 99.
The multi-bar rest will show the number of bars up to 98. After that it shows TACET.
Right, if you don’t have any items in the flow that would naturally cause the multi-bar rest to split (rehearsal marks, time signature changes, barline changes, etc.), this is what you’ll get.
Thanks, Daniel.
I do find it curious, though, that if Minimum number of bars in flow to show ‘Tacet’ is set to a number greater than the number of bars in the flow, it will display a multi-bar rest with the number of bars.
It’s a pity that the limit for showing the number of bars of rest is 98. Above that you automatically get TACET.
This might be a kind of workaround. for you.
The attached is a (little bit hacked) Dorico project with a TacetTreshold of 200 bars.
To get that in your project:
save the attached file
open your project
open the library manager
at “Compare to” select the project from the here attached (saved) file
at “Options” select Engraving options
search for rests>multi-bar rests
there you will see the difference at “Minimum number of bars ….”
hit the =/= to change it into ←
then choose Apply
You will now have your multi-bar rest with the number of bars instead of Tacet.
Thank you so much for doing that, Jan, and also for the very clear instructions.
While, as I had mentioned earlier, I could divide the long rest into shorter sections, it is useful to have the option of showing the total number of bars rest as one number.
