side chain on delay effect on FX channel

I have routed an audio track to a group channel. I then created a FX channel and added a delay effect and pressed the side chain button, because i only want delay on the vocal when it is silent. From the group channel, In the sends side, i choose side chain delay, but i do not get any delay effect at all. What am I doing wrong? The only way I can make side chaining work on the delay is by adding the delay effect to the inserts on the group track and then select the side chain delay effect via sends on the original track. Is this correct?

Well, given your step by step explanation on what you have done: You are not sending any signal to the main delay (audio) input of the fx channel
