Single Line Percussion Part

Hi team, I’m trying to replicate this chart for a mono linear snare drum part (right about the line/left below the line). I’ve created a single line percussion instrument but can’t get it working to get the 2 voices. So in a nutshell. I’d like a single line staff and be able to have two voices. It doesn’t have to be a percussion map (although preferred) and can be any staff. I’m coming from Sibelius where this was easy to do so may be looking at it from the wrong angle. Any help would be awesome!

Yeah, basically you need a Percussion kit, rather than just an Instrument. E.G. you could have a player with two separate Conga Instruments or combine them into a Kit so that they appear on one staff.

I downloaded the pump.dorico file. Thank you! How did you get it so that it just has the single staff line? I do quite a bit of writing with the single staff and would like to know how it all works.

Thanks Daniel. I took at basic drum kit and removed all instruments except the snare (v1 above the middle line) & bass drum (vs below the middle line). So I have the two instruments for the one player. How can I get them to appear on a single line staff? I’d really love to learn how to set up the single line staff (often with more than just two instruments) so am determined to work it out!

Library->Layout Options->Players->Percussion
Set to grid

Thanks Jesper, getting closer! I set it to grid but it’s got two lines. Is there another setting that I’m forgetting maybe?

You can use Move arrows in the lower left of the screen in your picture to move so that they are on the same line and perhaps using a different stem direction and voice.

Jesper

Thanks for the suggestion but I’m needing to have one above the line and the other below. It’s a very common use for percussion and snare drum notation using two voices on a single line staff. In the ‘pump’ file above shared by @claude_g_lapalme, they get it to have just the single line with the two voices. Image attached, Any idea how they got this? We must be getting close  !

Then you have to click the Edit percussion playing techniques and there you can add two techniques, one above and one below.

Jesper

Yes, I tried that but with no luck and still had the two line. On the ‘pump’ example they have it on the line (pic attached from the ‘pump’ file). I’ve tried to copy everything I can see in their settings but it’s just not coming out.

Thanks for your screenshot, but wouldn’t that just be for a single voice? I’m really needed the two voices so that I can apply individual rhythms and dynamics.

Then remove one of the instruments or put them on the same line

Jesper

Ah, didn’t look at the file. I think they used Edit instrument definition
to set it to 1 line and then used 5-line staff in Layout Options->Players->percussion

Jesper

But you need Dorico Pro to edit instruments I think

Awesome! That did it! Thank you so much for your help. Some serious work around to get it set up and I will no doubt forget everything we did when I have to do it again so will save a template with it and have this post.

I really appreciate all your trouble shooting and assistance. I am really liking Dorico but have so many habits for 20 years using Sibelius. I’m getting there  .

Also, I do have Dorico 5, is that Dorico Pro?

You should see on the splash screen when it starts, There are Dorico SE 5 and Dorico Elements 5 also but if you can edit the instrument definition I think you have pro.
