Greetings sorry for all the questions but I’m running into a lot of road blocks transitioning from Finale.
On playback I want to skip the DS the first time through. I tried “suppress playback” but that doesn’t work.
Thoughts?
Of course the first repeat would be (for the D.S.) the second pass; so perhaps one should try Suppress on passes: 1,2.
I just tried your suggestion, but that doesn’t work either.
It looks like the D.S. al Coda is attached inside the starting repeat. You can seethe dotted line going to its anchor spot. If you want it before the repeat starts then it needs to be at the end of the measure (where the text is). I would normally click on the bar line at the end of the measure where I want to place it. To be sure of what I’m doing in a case like this, I’d delete the DS al Coda and repeat sign, attach the DS al Coda to the now exposed “normal” bar line, then add back the repeat bar line. (I expect that you could do it more simply but it’s easy enough this way and I can see what I’m doing!)

Thanks for your reply, I just tried that as well, still not working.
I did have the DS attached to the repeat bar line and you’re correct the dotted line shows it going into the next measure. I’m not sure why. I deleted both and followed your suggestion but the same thing happens with the dotted line going into the next bar and the instant repeat back to the segno sign. This time I clicked “suppress playback always” and it stil repeats regardless of that.
Mike, I apologize but I think I missed something about what you are trying to do. Are there other repeats or a DC involved? I don’t understand how this DS al Coda needs to be ignored on the “first pass” from what is in the image. ![]()
Prior to the DS is a Montuno section that leads into the Mambo section after the repeat that’s shown. The Mambo section (bar 72-87 that the message says will never be played) returns to the Montuno section then you DS to the sign.
So the DS needs to be ignored on the first pass so playback continues on to the Mambo. Right now playback jumps as soon as it gets to the DS and the Mambo section is never played.
You should post the Dorico file. It sounds as if your D.S. should be a jump to a Coda.
OK Here it is.
I’m trying to figure how to make all this playback as the score indicates the sections should be played.
As a side note when I try to add the rehearsal marks they don’t always show on all parts. I’m not sure why that is.
And the “To Montuno” mark keeps trying to go over the the coda even though I’m trying to attach it to the bar line before the coda.
Section Repeats.dorico (2.4 MB)
BTW once in the Montuno section the Mambo is on Cue going back to the Montuno then DS al Coda
The way I’m reading this is:
Start → A → B, B → C → D → E, E 2nda THEN
B, B, C, D 4 bars, Coda 4 bars.
So, the Mambo section never comes.
If I’ve got the form correctly, I think the D.S. al Coda shouldn’t be al Coda. It should be just a D.S. And then, we could have a Segno 2 on the same bar as the original Segno, and have a D.S. 2 al Coda at the same place as the original one. I think that would do it?
Edit: It’s not doing it though. I’m still messing around figuring how to do this.
The form is
Start → A → B-B → C → D → E (montuno) - E 2nd ending → Mambo (on cue) w repeat plus 6 bars then → back to E (montuno) - E 2nd ending → DS to letter B → end of bar 37 → to coda
I need to indicate that the Mambo is on cue but, what I need now is for playback not to take the DS on the first pass, so playback continues on to the Mambo then takes the DS on the 2nd pass after going back to the montuno section a 2nd time.
Here is a revised version of your Dorico project which I think gives the desired playback sequence:
Section Repeats Revised.dorico (2.4 MB)
If you want the B section repeated after the D.S. al Coda jump, then select the D.S. al Coda marker and enable its Replay repeats property.
A Segno was added at the start of the Montuno with its Hide property activated and its Marker index property set to 2. The “To Montuno” text in bar 85 was replaced by a D.S. anchored at the start of the Coda with its Marker index property set to 2, its Custom text property set to “To Montuno” and its Replay repeats property enabled.
To get the D.S. al Coda to be skipped on the first pass, several things were done. First, this marker was moved to a rhythmic position just before the start of the Mambo. Then a D.S. and a Segno were added at the start of the Mambo. Both of these markers were selected, their Hide property was activated and their Marker index property was set to 3. Finally, the Suppress playback and Suppress on passes properties of the D.S. al Coda were turned off and this marker was moved back to the start of the Mambo.
John thanks for this, it may help get to what I’m after although what you have is still not the form I’m trying to get.
I’ll use what you’ve shown here to see if I can set things set up the way I want.
I’m starting to think from all this, that it’s not possible in Dorico for the DS jump marker to simply be ignored on the first pass. Is that correct? From everyone’s suggestions it looks like the only option is to do a somewhat complicated work around similar to what you’ve shown here.
If that’s true I don’t understand what the “suppress playback on passes” button is used for.
Well I’m not able to make this work for the form I want to playback. It’s way too complicated and taking to much time. I’ve decided the easiest work around is to simply have one Dorico file that looks correct for printing and a second file written out straight across for playback.
BTW: If someone from Dorico reads this, In Finale is was possible to just ignore a repeat marker (DS) the first time, then create a text marker “To Montuno” that you could tell to jump back to a specific measure (Montuno) then playback would come around to the DS a second time and would then jump back to the Segno sign and take the Coda.
It seems to me Dorico really should be able to easily do that.
Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions
Of course the downside of having to two files is that any changes or edits have to be inputted twice, once in each file
.
This is a problem I hope Dorico can figure out and simplify.
