I have a special problem with repeating. I want to skip 8 bars in the part that is played the second time. Experimenting with de dal segno results in skipping the 8 bars the first time and not the second time. Maybe it is just a simple problem, but I can not find the solution. Thank you in advance.
To avoid skipping bars on the first pass, add a D.S. and a Segno at the rhythmic position where you want to start skipping bars on the second pass, set their Marker index property to 2 and hide them. To get the repeat to play after adding the hidden D.S., go to Library > Playback Options > Repeats and activate Play repeats after D.S./D.C. jump. Now add the D.S. for the second pass at a different rhythmic position than the hidden D.S. and then move it to the same position. Finally, add a Segno where the skipped bars should end.
Thank you very much John. It works perfect. Although I have to say that it is a bit cumbersome for a relative simple thing. I hope that there will be a better solution with a next update. Maybe it is for the programmers more complicated than we musicians can imagine.
I’ve never seen a repeat structure quite like this. What about having bars 5-8 in the first ending and bars 7-10 in the second ending? You would need to repeat the content of bars 7-8. I think this would be clearer for the players.
This is of course the normal situation. However, in this case the first time is about 100 bars. The second time is with the bars 50-58 skipped. So it is the question what is the best way to write this down. I had once a rehearsal with a “number 1” of 30 bars. It takes a lot of time to explain how it works. What is wisdom? Maybe better to just write it out.
I have seen a pop song with a shorter second verse (so a similar situation to yours) notated with first and second endings added in the middle of the repeat. (Unconnected to the repeat sign!) Weird and unusual notation, but I understood what they meant and it saved a lot of space compared to writing both verses out in full.
I think that approach would be more clear than jumping forward to a segno
