SL 12 Permanent Crackles in WASAPI after switching to Asio mode once

Windows 11Pro system (latest) here:

  • when I first used SL 12 after a new install it started in WASAPI mode and played back as expected.
  • after switching to Asio I had to correct the wrong Sample rate it chose (it chose 48 Khz and I had to switch back to my soundcard settings of 44.1 KHz)
  • now I can play back in Asio, but have to lower my soundcard volume significantly: that’s no proper option, as I want my approximate standard volume for different applkications
  • trying to get back to WASAPI mode or resetting to standard settings doesn’t work any longer´:
-if I try, SL12 produces massive static/crackles, as if it was still in some wrong samplerate mode, despite showing the correct sample rate (44.1) at the bottom left.

How can I get a clean Spectralayers 12 install, with all settings/preferences deleted completely (including registry entries)?
A simple uninstall, reboot and reinstall didn’t seem to get me anywhere.

I have Revo Uninstaller Pro and tried that already. Even after additional cleaning up, Spectralayers 12 still “remembered” my last Asio setting and went into crackling noise immediatly again after changing to WASAPI.

I will have to contact support, after not finding any solution here.

I had the same problem and the only solution i`ve found was to instigate my system backup made before SL12 and reinstall SL12 and leave it Wasapi mode.
A method is needed for a clean install and restoration of all sound settings.
I also found it broke Sound ID reference used in windows (Not the VST3 plugins)and again a reinstall of the backup made before SL12 install was the only solution.

As my last Windows system backup is 3 weeks old, I will not go back and invest even more time, just to avoid this weird Spectralayers bug. No other audio software I use is having this kind of driver issue, and Steinberg should rather find a way to solve the problem than force users to avoid options offered in their software, or reinstall complete system backups.

This weird bug will limit my use of Spectralayers 12 to my notebook, where I have to wait for a quick fix for the AMD graphics card processing bug, hopefully in two weeks.

I can see no reason to use anything other than WASAPI in SpectraLayers on Windows.

FWIW I can switch seamlessly between WASAPI and ASIO (RME drivers) so perhaps it’s the audio interface drivers that are at fault?

My UAD audio drivers continue to work flawlessly with tons of other audio software (including Steinberg apps, and including switching between various Windows and Asio drivers in all of these apps), so I don’t see how they could be at fault. Spectralayers is the only app with this kind of problem on my PC system.

Anyways, fine that switching works within your system.

On Windows, quit SpectraLayers, hold down the Windows key and press “R”, then enter “%APPDATA%\Steinberg” and press Enter. Locate the folder “SpectraLayers 12.0” and delete it. When you restart SpectraLayers, it will recreate the folder with fresh settings.

On my machine the audio and spectral layers 12 display are not in sync with the audio ahead of the display
It was in order to correct this that I switched and then all the other problems appeared and were not undone by switching the driver back to WASAPI

Yes, deleting the appdata folder was one of the hints I got from support. But it didn’t solve the problem.

I just tried again, testing a new build of Windows 11 24H2 with RME RayDAT and SL12, I can switch back and forth between WASAPI and ASIO seamlessly with no issues whatsoever. Not denying the problem, just saying I can’t reproduce it here on this hardware.

@Hippo, what’s your audio interface?

Fine with me: I often can’t reproduce problems on my system, which others report.

Just looking for the root of that weird bug.

After trying every possible fix (including proposals from support) over the weekend and losing a lot of time, I see no solution for the problem. Seems I have to face the fact that Spectralayers 12 Pro has stopped working in WASAPI mode on my music PC permanently.

Among many, many audio apps on my system, not a single other app shows this kind of audio driver weirdness. I can only hope Steinberg is able to fix the extremely annoying issue in future updates once and for all.
