Slash region with 2 slashes per measure

Hi all,

In a lead sheet with a half-time feel, I’d like the slashes to appear twice per measure rather than four times. How can I achieve this?

My current workaround is to enter quarter notes on beats 1 and 3 and then hide the quarter rests on beats 2 and 4. (Of course, the beats in a half-time groove aren’t really on 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the 4/4 meter, but I hope you understand what I mean. )

I already tried changing the time signature from 4/4 to 2/2, but that still gave me four slashes per measure.

I’m not at my Dorico computer to test this, but what if you add a hidden 2/2 time signature and then in Notation Options>Note Grouping>Rhythmic Slashes set the slashes to follow the time signature denominator?

You can just use a stemless Slash Voice rather than a Slash Region:

Once input as quarters with a Slash Voice, you can then use Remove Rests. Or input as half and change the Notehead Set.

OK, so when selecting in Notation Options “Rhythm slashes follow time signature denominator” in 2/2 Dorico keeps writing 4 slashes on each bar, which is not only wrong but also means that the above option is not true because Dorico is not following the denominator when this is a half-note (“2”).

Surely the Team is aware of this bug and will someday fix it.

You need to select the 2/2 signpost, and to untick this in the properties:

Then you can choose another style in Engraving Options

You can get two slashes with this setting.

If you don’t like the noteheads, you can change the oversized slashes under Library->Notehead Sets.

Thanks Charles, but that option was unticked from start (Why?? Common time note grouping should be the default option in Common time…). So it does not work.

By the way, I do not have a 2/2 Signpost, only a Key signature signpost (even though the Time signature option is ticked in the view menu). I must be doing something wrong here.

Strange… You have this Notation Option for this flow, so this is your default, that’s why I have to untick the property.

That’s some extra and (for me) strange steps. I guess that in Noteheads Sets I should also remove all the diamond shaped noteheads which appear by default. I am not going to do that as I do not know if I will need them or not sometime.

I am sorry about the confussion, but I am not the OP, I was just asking…

But yes, that “Use common time grouping for cut common time signature” is unticked in my Notation Options, starting from a default piano document, I do not know why. I do not think I have messed with this anytime as I always use common time grouping in common time signature.

It’s unticked by default in Dorico, so you probably just didn’t change that.

If you don’t save the notehead sets as default, it will only be for the current document. Yes, you could remove the diamonds. Or, use Reset to Factory.
