Slashes in drum parts, hiding upper layer only - feature request

So I occasionally like to hide just the upper voice on drum parts behind slashes, leaving the kick visible to indicate what the bass player is doing. And I want playback to still happen. Here’s what I’ve tried.

  • First I tried applying a normal slash region over notation. This allows playback. But when I click the “show other voices” button, all my layers show. There’s no way to specify WHICH layer I want to be visible.
  • Next I found a ‘slashes’ option in the contextual (right-click) menu. This can be found at Voices/Rhythmic Slashes/Slashes Without Stems. But this is a very problematic item - it turns the notes into slashes, but does all the rhythms (including eighth notes) unlike regular slash notation that just shows the beats not the notes. Secondly, it does not hide articulations. Thirdly it applies it self to every measure in that instrument, not just the bar I selected. This is much too buggy to be of use.

I guess I have to use two drum lines, one for playback and one for notation - something I was hoping to avoid.

Feature request - when using a slash region, might it be possible to indicate WHICH voices you want to be visible: none, upper or lower?

I find drum notation to be the most complex and cranky area of notation, especially when one adds the wish to have proper playback as well. While I was able to pull off this trick in Finale and Sibelius (slash regions hiding one layer/voice only) I still find Dorico to be the winner for everything else.

Great suggestion!

Some would argue that you have to expect rhythmic slashes will display the rhythm of a voice.

Yes, this changes the current voice (and the whole voice) to a Slash Voice - just as if you had created a new Slash Voice to begin with. The same thing would happen if you selected a note in a piano staff and performed the function.

It’s not a bug; it’s just annoying (for me).
