Slow project

I have a project that is acting very slow. e.g. Turning the instrument filter on or off takes about 20-30 seconds. Removing an empty player from the score takes a similar time.

It’s basically a big band plus a few extra things. There are other instruments in the template that are not in use.

Diagnostics is attached but please let me know if I can send the project. I don’t want to do it without asking!!

Indeed, I can see from your most recent session that changing the instrument filter setting is taking around 18 seconds. Please do provide me with the project, either attaching it here or sending it to me via private message, and I’ll take a look.

I’m working on a project that has a string quartet and 10 percussion instruments. Since I started the project (about a month ago) Dorico’s response time has slowed down quite a bit, reminding me of a very big project I have in progress, which uses over 70 instruments.
I’m using Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 since most of the instruments are VSL. I have an iMac 27" with a3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel core i9 processor & 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 memory. Maybe that’s no longer enough for the program to function as it should?
Here’s the diagnostic file to look at.

Hi @algae592009 while I am sure someone of the Team will look at your diagnostics, in the meantime:

-did you try, on a copy of your project, to edit it after applying the Silence playback template, or another different template? Is there any difference?

-In some posts there have been slowness issues reported also caused by the Expression Maps used. Are you using your own EMs or are there from some third party origin?

-did you try the “trick” to Lock the layout in engrave mode, while working in galley view? (several people, me included, noticed an improvement in responsiveness, caused by the reduced calculations that Dorico needs to do when the layout is locked)

We’ll need the project itself, along with details of which specific operations you are finding slow, in order to investigate further.

OK,
Here’s a sample file for my project.
String Quartet sample.dorico (1.7 MB)

The issues I’m encountering:

  1. scrolling through the piece in galley view is choppy. Screen doesn’t respond smoothly; it feels like the processing of this is too hard for the program to do.
  2. yesterday the program was left idle for a while and when I came back it had “crashed and quit”. I got the apple message indicating so and giving me the option to send a report to them. Dorico also allowed me to do the same once I reopened it. This happened 2 or 3 times in a span of 5 hours.
  3. Every task I try to do takes for ever. Just now when prepping the sample file I needed to delete a jete marking from the string parts, and every delete was not immediate, taking between 5 to 10 seconds each time. Similar behavior happens with pretty much everything else I’m doing: inputting notes, moving notes, copying/pasting notes/score symbols, etc.
  4. I forgot to mention that I also get the colored spinning wheel every time I do any edit.

I do have several percussion maps and expression maps I created for the percussion instruments.
The strings are using the EM’s I bought from Symphonic Riot.
Let me know if you need anything else I can provide.
Thanks

Hi @algae592009 I tried your example on my iMac (I have exactly the same as yours, just with 128GB Ram). I loaded the Note performer Playback template (so some percussion instrument don’t load because are custom).

Every editing operation (moving/editing notes or dynamics or playing technique, adding player, scrolling, etc…) is pretty instantaneous.

So it probably has to do with the Playback/Expression maps part of it. Let’s see what the team discovers. (Did you try with the Silence Playback Template?)
