How can I avoid this:

are you in page view? or galley view?
in the former, in theory (unless you’ve forced spacing that’s too tight, or your staves are too big) in page view that should fix itself automatically.
In the latter, you don’t get any auto-spacing of any kind. you have to switch to page view to see how the engraving will look.
(on a side note, if that’s a piano part, I’d not separate the octaves in the right hand into different voices. I’d rather just have octaves sharing stems.)
