Solo state: Undo?

Used cubase a long time. Im wondering whether all this time, I may have missed something
For trouble shooting and focus, often will solo a selection of tracks, then just need an exclusive solo on a track for checking and then need to go back to the solo seleciton which might be a number of tracks. This is tedious and now Im aware of it in other DAWs, is there tip, trick or technique that I can temporarily exc solo a track but then jump back to the previous solo state?

Cheers

I think what you were looking for is solo defeat. Here is a YouTube short that describes it

Thanks @Wickham_Sky …but no not it. Im pretty familiar with solo defeat but that would normally be on your busses and fx, master etc stuff that is system wide (but use it however one wants of course…thats just what you do on a console). What is being done here is more like a Listen buss with a -inf but a listen buss is often as post fader but direct to the preview buss.

Use case

  1. Solo eg 6 or 8 tracks/sub tracks
  2. Just for a quick check on 1 you have to use exclusive solo which breaks the solo state
  3. However I have eg 10 or 12 tracks that are part of the focus group. The ā€œlast solo stateā€ not being present means I have to reselect them…or turn off SD which is just as tedious.

I already asked GPT, looked on youtube but nothing there so Im wondering how other peeps in Cubase deal with it.

Ive done a quick workaround with PLE where I just keep only the tracks of focus group visible and execute as a keyboard shortcut which just solos all visible tracks…not the whole solution but Im working

Oh I see. Perhaps a second mix console window with only the focused tracks and utilizing q-link for solo? I use multiple monitors which makes that possible for me. I hope you find your answer on the forum.

Cheers

Yeah I use 5 monitors, 1 has a mixconsole dedicated to bussing/metering etc (1 is a tiny 5" screen used for macros so 4 really)

Thing is you work in the project window so it doesnt quite equate with managing tracks…but Ill work something out…as mentioned just wondered what others do

Have a good one

You can sync the project window to any of the mix console windows effectively controlling the q linked solo tracks spontaneously

Yeah but I mean, console only shows actual channels whereas you work in the project view when tracking so you deal with midi (sometimes), folding etc as well. They have group channels now but Im still on 12 so that helps.
Also, if you use eg Avid control etc, it only links to the main console 1 so you have to treat that as the main work focus. I have a plenty of real estate…but this solo stuff has bugged me for a while…love to see your setup too

One way I can think of is to create two PLEs.

In the first one, we can alter the names of the tracks in Solo, by adding a keyword, say for example, [solo]. We can think of it as saving the solo states to our tracks. In the post process commands we can set the deactivate all solo, and then the solo command (just for the selected track).

The second PLE, is for targeting tracks containing this keyword, and a) setting solo to enabled for them and b) restoring their original names, by replacing the keyword.

You can then call the first PLE for storing the states and activating the exclusive solo.
Once done, you can deactivate solo and then call the second PLE.

Just a note here: I tried in the second PLE to add to the Pre-Process commands, the deactivate all solo command, didn’t work as expected. I guess it’s something for reporting (I’m on CB15).

Cheers @m.c
Ive got a system working atm…and at the same time its forces a minimised workspace ie track count…but once you learn the last solo state in other daws (well reaper anyway)…just makes a lot of sense.
On top of that; project window vis config 8 is now a temp spot to hold the vis state as well which really helps as well.
