[SOLUTION]
In my case, this was due to a bug, I reset preferences (hold cmd + opt + shift while lauching) and now the Render in Place function is back to normal.
========================
Cubase is not rendering “channel settings” when it is selected. It prints also the processing that is on the busses that are after the channel.
I am on Cubase 15, I believe this used to be different in previous versions.
Let say you want to print a reverb, if you print it “channel settings”, it also prints the processing that is on the group after that track.
The work around is the assign output to stereo out (making sure stereo out fader has no processing and is at 0.0)
Ok Im testing some stuff and this is due to the fact that I am using a very advanced routing template (direct routing) and I am not going out of the Stereo Out but out to the Stereo Out 2 (dummy) and to an other group.
So I guess that disconnecting the Stereo Out is not an option if you want to keep the functions of the Channel Settings Render Selection.
So after a lot of research and testing, these are my findings:
If a track goes to a group, and that group goes to multiple outputs with Direct Routing but the first slot of direct routing is not ending in the STEREO OUT (at the end of the chain), it will brake Render Selection (Channel Settings). Cubase will automatically render with the group processing (of all of the destinations of the direct routing).
This is an edge case, and I am basically “hacking” Cubase at this point but just wanted to leave this here if ever there are others that have this problem.
There is an issue with Direct Routing, which all my Templates use, where a Track won’t render if the first slot in the Direct Routing list isn’t enabled as a routing destination. It doesn’t matter what the destination is in the first slot - just that it goes somewhere and it is enabled.
So I have a Group Track in my Templates called Render Bus. It’s a dead end and doesn’t go anywhere or do anything. It sits in the first Direct Routing slot and the real functional destinations occupy the slots below.
I created a routing folder so I just need to move the tracks in the folder, render, and then move them back.
It’s a bit of a pain, and this is not logical, what should be rendered should be the exact same thing that gets sent to the Listen Bus on that channel.
My guess is that this will never get fixed, so I suggest the routing folder (or your troup track).
Other workaround is to just assign the output of the track to Stereo Out (temporarly), then render in place, then reassign.
I used to do that, but most of the time it resulted in 1) a blank rendered file 2) brief cursing 3) finally remembering to enable Stereo Out 4) a successful render 5) forgetting to disable Stereo Out about 20% of the time…
Eventually I realized that I could leave a dummy destination enabled all the time and it would behave pretty much like rendering does when not using Direct Routing at all.
