[SOLVED] Staccato No Longer On Playing Techniques List, No Internal Effect

For some reason I cannot fathom, the standard Staccato playing technique no longer shows up in my Playing Techniques list, and when I assign the Staccato-dot from the left panel in Write mode to a note, the playing technique lane in the Key Editor does not show Staccato as an internal effect. Instead it shows no internal effect and returns a base switch of Natural.

I cannot manage to screen -capture the playing technique lane popup that clearly shows this.

???

What Expression Map are you using?

Is this in just one document, or all of them?

Don’t forget to check my old nemesis …

der Abgang, thanks for the suggestion.

I do have quarter note selected here and it is checked. I added the left-panel Staccato to a quarter note in Write Mode, the Staccato dot showed above the note.

It (the dot) will show but it won’t activate the playback technique.

benwiggy,

I am using my own expression maps, but it doesn’t matter which I use. I even checked using the simple, built-in CC11 Dynamics map and added a Staccato entry to the map. Same result.

I have built and used a slew of successful expression maps for years. This seems like a corruption of the Playing Techniques list and the internal effects connection with the Left Panel entry in Write Mode.

But I do have the quarter note checked. I guess I could experiment with setting it to a half note … ?

And again, Staccato does not even show in the Playing Techniques list …

It does show in the Playback techniques list, but not Playing Techniques.

I think it’s probably best at this point for me to upload a cut-down version of the file. The file is built around connections to four instances of VE Pro, so that connection won’t be available to others, but the Dorico file hopefully is sufficient. The project is designed for setup with VE Pro and my Synchron libraries only. No notes entered.

D5 - VEP 7.3 - Synchron - Setup - 2025 03 01.dorico (796.0 KB)

As ever, you’ll get the best support if you supply a project file that shows the problem.

There is most likely some conflict in your expression map that Dorico cannot resolve.

Just opening the project and inputting a series of notes with different values, you can see, the first instance of the playback technique being activate is with eigth notes. The larger notes have dots but don’t trigger anything.

So basically (and I always hate writing this): It works for me.

So, it turns out after all this, that if I follow your advice but increase maximum staccato note value to a half-note it solves the problem, even thought my test examples involved quarter notes. Go figure, but problem solved.

Thanks der Abgang, and thanks all.

Good to learn that the setting is > and not >= … learn something new every day – although I have it unchecked as a default.

Yeah, it doesn’t show that way in the Playback Options / Timing.

I can’t remember why I ever checked it, but I’m definitely unchecking it now.
