Some bugs and minor feature requests

Hi Dorico team.

I’m writing a list of bugs and minor feature requests that I’m hoping to see in Dorico at some point. You might have some, or most of it, already noted down, but hopefully this can help some of the things to get prioritized. In general I think it would be nice with an update that’s focusing more on completing some features like more advanced tempo equations and tempo text options and expanding the engraving options, rather than adding new features (which is nice as well, not complaining  ).

Thank you for a great software, I’m loving every moment of it!

Bugs:

  • Hairpins don’t stop before barline, even then the option has been set manually, if a gracenote is after the same barline (picture 1).

  • If a hairpin is ending at a unis., it will show up in the divisi staff.

  • Right now it’s not possible to have grace notes both before and after a barline in two different instruments.

  • Bar number changes are tied to timesig changes. This means I have some random bar number changes which are unintended. At least if this is a feature, I think there should be a signpost so it’s easy to find the mistakes.

  • If you go from 2 divisi to 3 divisi on the same page, the new divisi staff isn’t shown.

  • Player label disappears when you make group divisi.

  • It seems to me that the collision box for accidentals are sometimes a bit too large. I see this if i have a grace note preceding an accidental, the spacing is too big or if I have a tuplet number above an accidental, the tuplet is pushed too far away.

  • If you have a 6-tuplet filling a whole 4/4 bar, if you then add two dotted half notes to fill the bar out and make them into a multinote tremolo, then the dots disappear (picture 2).

Features:

  • I would love the possibility in the properties panel to move time- and key sigs before barlines. This is mainly to save space if you have local time and key changes. They can take up a lot op space that is sometimes free in the end of the bar preceding the change.
  • I think it should be possible to show interchangeable time sigs only as the second time signature and with and without parenthesis. This is again to save space in a full score, but it would be nice to have this as a local property so you can show the full information in the parts.
  • I love the option to snap unis. to the first note, but I really miss a snap divisi to first note. Each divisi text should be independent of one another so if the instruments enter at different bars it will show the divisi only above when they each enter.
  • A hide cresc./dim. text option is missing. This is both if you want the playback but without the notation or if you want the dotted line to continue but without restating that it’s a crescendo or diminuendo.
  • It would be nice with a setting to hide hyphens in lyrics when the space between the two syllables are under a certain threshold. This can save some space when lyrics are very busy and make the words more readable.
  • I’m really missing an options to make a flow attacca. This should automaticaly make key and time signature warnings into the coming flow and allow for ties and slurs to cross over the barline and write attacca.
  • An option for making laissez vibre snap the the barline instead of having a fixed lenght.
  • It would be nice with an option for text over a fermata.
  • An option to allow tuplet numbers to intersect with staff lines and a manual Y offset would be nice for vertical space optimization.
  • It would be nice with an option to snap con sord. and other objects to after the last note in parts and snap to the first note in full score.
  • There should be a “Horizontal offset from center of notehead” option for long and short slurs. If you use this option it looks very nice on broader slurs but it looks awkward and cramped with shorter slurs.
  • I need a solution for slurs between only two grace notes, they become two small, maybe the previous suggesten will fix that?
  • An options for automaticaly making different desk parts for strings.
  • It would be great with an option to make precortionary accendentals take other instruments in acount. If you have a F# in a violin and a F natural in a viola in the same bar, then Dorico should automatically put a natural on the F.

Welcome to the forum @Aske_Vang_Rasmussen!
At least one thing you can solve:

You’ll get the dots if you enter your dotted half notes as 3:2q instead of 6:4q:

Yes, I’m aware of this workaround, but it still seems like a workaround and not an intended feature, or is that just me?

I think I wouldn’t call it exactly a workaround, because it’s the same function and the same operation — you’re entering tuplets using the tool that is meant for entering tuplets. But is it intended? I suppose not, but who knows!

Here’s another bug that hasn’t been fixed
