Some, but not all, percussion-kit instruments make no sound

I’m working with Dorico support on this issue, but I thought I’d also throw it out to the forum while my support person is out of town for a week.

When I build a percussion kit, only a subset of the instruments in that kit play correctly. The rest either make no sound or all merely play the same, incorrect, “default” sound. That default might change after a reboot from, say, a conga sound to a kick drum.

Worse, some of the misbehaving instruments occasionally do briefly work after a Dorico relaunch. Maybe it’s because of some seemingly unrelated action I perform in Dorico, but regardless, the respite is usually short-lived. It’s crazy.

This problem occurs even when I create a percussion kit that uses sound libraries from only a single VST; and even when that VST is one that works correctly with non-percussion players in the same project.

My Playback Template includes endpoints for all the VSTs that I’m using. MIDI channels and ports seem to be configured correctly.

Has anybody encountered symptoms like these before that weren’t related to PB templates?

I’m having a similar issue where a percussion kit I’ve created that uses a Kontakt instance is sending midi to 3 of the instruments on channels 1-3 but not to other instruments on channels 4-7. The Kontakt instance doesn’t receive midi on channels 4-7. I see you never received a reply. Did you work it out with the support technician? Maybe there is a clue for me if you got a solution that way.

@Mark_Pritchard

No, no luck so far. I don’t think any of the support people (except maybe Ulf) believe that what I’m seeing is a bona fide bug.

And actually, what I’m hearing seems a little different than your problem. I can display the percussion kit instruments one by one in Play Mode and actually see that Dorico has lost the MIDI channels and percussion maps that I’d manually assigned to them. That is, all kit instruments do make sound, unlilke your case, and what I hear agrees with their configurations. The problem is that Dorico has changed their configurations without notice.

This happens when I change the # of lines in that player’s staff from 5 to 7 or vice versa. It’s possible that other user actions would also cause this to occur.

Mark, we can’t give any specific advice unless you provide us with the project in which you’re experiencing the problem so that we can take a look.
