Some Parts Not Showing As Available For Cue

Hello All

I’m back struggling with cues again. For some reason, not all of my instruments are showing as available for cue notes in another part. As you can see from the attached screenshots, I’ve got a fiddle part into which I would like to plug a bass cue; the guitar part shows up in the popover as a cue option, but not the bass. Any suggestions? Thanks as always!

You don’t have any music in the bass part?

Oops, sorry - I took the screenshots from the start of the score to show the part names, but I’m adding the cues later in the piece. I can see how that would be confusing! The specific part of the piece has notes in the bass. Revised screenshots attached.

And it is indeed possible to cue an instrument that has no notes (I tried that now), so my guess was off. I have no idea why it’s not working for you. I can’t reproduce it.

Hi @pjohnst2, please upload a Dorico file with that setup (you can cut-down your current project), so we can see what is going on.

Great, thanks. Here it is.

Isla and Molehill Book I - Lord Ullin’s Daughter.dorico (927.3 KB)

Thanks for making me feel a wee bit less dumb about my screenshots @Rikard. Much appreciated!

Thankyou for the file, @pjohnst2.

The instrument name is Solo Bass:

Holy cow, I knew it was something simple, but not quite that simple and obvious! So the lesson here is that the cues grab the instrument name, not the layout name, yes?

Thanks so much, great support as always.

Yes. (With “layout name” you probably mean Player name?)
And: if you like, you can rename your Solo Bass instrument into Bass, and Dorico will grab it in the popover.

Yes, this is from the manual

Start entering the name of the instrument whose music you want to show in the cue.

The candidate instrument menu appears below the popover and shows possible source instruments, including section player divisions and individual grand staff instrument staves, extra staves, and ossia staves.

Perfect, thanks. And yes, sorry - I meant Player Name, though the layout is also called “Bass”. As a multi-decade Finale user I expect to get the Dorico terminology fully internalized by 2112.

IMHO, it’d be good if the list of instruments that pop up when you begin typing in the popover would match anywhere in the name and not only from the start. Then I could type Bass and find this solo bass, or a Double bass instead of only the bassoon. Or type sax and get a list of all the saxophones.

Another trap I have stumbled upon: if you have renamed an instrument by adding a space in front of the name (to avoid automatic numbering), you won’t see that instrument unless you start by typing a space. That’s obvious, I guess; still, I have fallen into that trap myself more than once.

Thanks for sharing that @k_b . I can certainly see myself doing something like that, so I’m glad to know what to watch for.
