Something in Cubase 15 occasionally triggers a huge system lag

There have been some occasions when my system gets a huge lag in the middle of using Cubase.

The lag: cursor movement gets jagged, every button click takes seconds to respond inside cubase and also inside windows system. The lag remains after closing Cubase and is gone after PC restart. CPU meter inside Cubase and also inside Windows task manager looks normal (around 15% generally). This problem has occured only when working with Cubase (about 10 times now). It has happened when creating a new project and also while working with a project. I haven´t found a specific cause that triggers the lag yet. It could be something to do with Cubase trying to read and write from my drive but there is too little data to confirm it. I haven´t noticed any additional background activities like Windows Update or antivirus scanning when it happens.
I think it was two weeks ago when I first noticed the lag.

It could be also a hardware fault on my system but it seems to be related to Cubase somehow as it has occured only when working with my DAW.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem?

Cubase 15 pro, build 15.0.10
Windows 11, build 10.0.26200

Hopefully this is not due to a Windows update. We had only the reports about MIDI as the midi system got exchanged in Windows. There was nothing about lags so far.

It could be a fault caused by Windows but I don´t think it´s related to the new Windows MIDI service, because today it happened when I was creating a new project. Right at the spot when giving a name to a new project folder.

What antivirus you have?

No additional antivirus software, only Windows Security

I wouldn’t rule out that a different component of your system got updated and now runs amok on real time tasks.

Yes, that could be, but it´s strange that the lag has occured only when using Cubase. Could be a coincidence but it has happened about 10 times now. I can´t find a way to reproduce it but I will try to look into windows task manager in more detail when I get the lag again.

Maybe this is a good time to link a video again (an oldie but goodie):

Just as a potential source of inspiration for troubleshooting.

Could it have something to do with your USB port/s going to sleep. Do you have them set to always remain awake in the device manager? Also if your have a graphics card, make sure you’re updated with the latest studio driver.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into it.

This doesn’t sound related to MIDI.

If you suspect it’s related to writing files, things to check

  • Is the folder you’re (or Cubase behind the scenes) writing to OneDrive-managed? If so, I recommend putting your files elsewhere.
  • You can exclude the Cubase process from real-time AV scanning from Defender. Be sure to use the full path of the Cubase process so you don’t get a spoofed one in Downloads, for example.

But, if you’re seeing system-wide lag, it smells like a fundamental issue: drive or GPU. Very few things can cause a system-wide slow down when they have problems, but those are two.

If you have your Cubase projects stored to an extra drive (internal or external}, also check that drive regarding SSD damage and similar issues.

Same issue here on Windows 10

I have exactly the same issue. Tried the same analyses as @allankasuk

But I couldn’t find any driver problem or software or anti virus issue or conflict and didn’t change anything on my laptop for the last 6 month’s, except the regular updates. I also don’t know when it happens, just at regular moments when working with Cubase (15 elements).

I always end all started software before I open Cubase. So when I start Cubase, nothing else is running, even my Onedrive and Gdrive sync. is then temporary paused.

Just a FYI: About 5 days ago, a Windows 11 update came through. It seemed to be fairly substantial as my system rebooted twice during the install. After the update, Cubase 15 performance was clearly degraded. Performance meter was jumping all over the place. I immediately removed the update and rebooted. Cubase performance was back to normal
