Sound on note entry, but not on playback

Hi all,

Brand new to Dorico as of yesterday. Been using Finale since 1997, but it’s just not keeping up with the times, so I’m a Dorico newbie now!

I’m trying to set up my massive orchestra template to get everything working for compositions. I use Orchestral Tools libraries for the most part and I also have Damage 2 for taiko drums that I’ll need in this project. I have plenty of other libraries too, but not that I’d be featuring in general orchestral work. I’ve spent all day yesterday importing expression maps from Art Director for Cubase and trying to set up the expressions with negative track delay per articulation and controls for volume on CC1 an CC11 or Velocity and CC11 (depending on whether Sine player tells me the articulation is Xfade or not).

I’m now trying to set up percussion maps which is quite the challenge.

I’m able to get playback on note entry for pitched instruments and my crash cymbal (I haven’t worked on any other percussion maps yet), but not my triangle for some reason yet to be sorted out.

One thing I’m worried about as I set up these maps is that I don’t seem to have playback when I play the project, despite having playback on note entry.

The project template is too large to upload here, but I have a link to it on my Google Drive here.

I’m sure it’s all been asked before, but being so new to Dorico, I don’t yet have the vocabulary to know what words to search for!

Can anyone help sort me out so I can get the rest of my maps made and get copying my unfinished symphony movement into Dorico? (Yes, I know I could XML import what I have on Finale, but I thought, since it’s only 44 bars, and a lot of doubling in the opening sections, it’d be a good exercise to manually transcribe it so I can get used to entering all the usual things)

Many thanks,
Chris

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on moving over from Finale.

Your Expression Maps don’t have a “Natural” expression, which is the default condition.

Ah, that fixed it!

Do I need to set a performance method for each of those key switches in the expression maps too?

Not quite sure what you mean by that. You need to define the appropriate KS and CCs for “Natural” in the Expression maps. You shouldn’t need to do anything else.

I just mean for the other key switches, do I need to assign a “playback technique” for each key switch? The other key switches don’t have anything set for them, so I assume Dorico won’t know when to actually use the key switch unless I set those too.

I see some of them have techniques assigned, but others don’t. And some have the same assigned to more than one key switch! This could be time consuming, but I’m willing to do it if it means setting up once and never again

If you want to use a particular patch (what SINE calls an “articulation”) in the sample, then you’ll have to assign it to something in that notation that’s going to trigger it.

However, I find with many OT instruments that there are patches that I don’t need/want/can’t use.

I might use the same patch for different expressions; and do things like give different Note Durations within Natural (and Legato) different patches.

It’s up to you. (Invariably, I find that the expression map needs tweaking one way for one piece, and another way for another – but that might just be my bad setup!)
