Please look at this picture, an example of what happens throughout the project.
The space before the end of each bar looks too big to me. It is not that bad in the full score, rather only in part layouts. Engraving Options being shared between all layouts, I checked the Spacing Gaps page and here is what I have:
The gap before barline is the same as factory options but what is concerning is that diminishing that has no effect, as if there was something else preventing this.
What other options are available, besides the Note Spacing tool?
For now I have increased a bit the minimum gap before the first note of the bar from 1/2 to 3/4 to compensate. However, that has the counter-effect of creating too much space in passages with many regular notes (e.g., several systems of regular 16th-notes).
I think the Gap before barline setting is effectively a minimum gap before barline setting. What are your Note Spacing settings? If you are using the factory default of 4 spaces for a quarter note, then any of those eighth notes are already being allotted 2 spaces, which is obviously larger than the 1/2 space Gap before barline setting, so the Gap before barline setting doesn’t come into play here.
In this example below it makes no difference whether the gap is 1/2 or 0 as the eighth note spacing allotment is already greater than either of those:
If I set the gap to 4, then it does make a difference as that value is larger than the specified eighth note spacing allotment, but it doesn’t change the quarter (if Note Spacing set to 4 spaces) or dotted half allotment:
I think all of the gaps before the barlines in your example are just the standard spacing allotments that you’ve specified in Layout Options / Note Spacing.

The Note Spacing is set to 3 7/8.
Is there any way to make this smaller? It’s quite annoying and looks unbalanced compared to the space before the first note. It seems heavily dependent on what meter one is using and what is the value of the last note but still, not ideal by a long shot.
