I’ve read plenty of threads about chord symbols but don’t recall one that addresses this particular issue. I find the chord symbol below a bit hard to read, with very little space between “add” and the following flat symbol.
Is there a simple way to insert a little extra space there without causing problems with other symbols? (Or maybe it’s just my ageing eyes!)
In Engraving options>Text, there’s a new field to add some space before those text accidentals. Have you tried it? I have, yesterday, in a File info field (using {@flat@}, and noticed it did not change anything, so there might be a problem here…
[Edit] I just checked, the Engraving options>Text does work on a staff label, not in the File info tokens…
It might work correctly on those chord symbols. For the record, the default value should be 0,70pts.
[Re-Edit] Engraving options>Text is not for Chord symbols
Many thanks, Jesper and Marc, for taking the time to look into this issue for me, it’s much appreciated.
I’m using the chord symbol font GothiChords, which, unless I’m mistaken, was included with the Scoring Express Musical Theatre Pit Orchestra template. I haven’t explored font options before, so I’ve been using whatever the default is, either provided by Dorico or Scoring Express. I’ve just reinstalled the latest version of the template (v1.9) and confirmed that the chord font in the template matches the one in my project.
I’ll reach out to Philip Rothman to double-check, but in the meantime, do you have any recommendations for an alternative font that offers better readability?
The default music font is Bravura (the parent font of Chord Symbols Music Text Font), but I’m not sure what the Font toggle switch (Chord Symbols Music Text Font) actually controls. It’s currently set to Off (see below):
So it’s using Bravura text, that should be OK unless there’s a matching music text font for your template. @FredGUnn is the chord symbol expert (among other things) around here.
Philip referred your message to me, Roy.
It looks as though I missed this particular candidate when working through kerning pairs for chord symbols. You can fix it yourself by putting that chord symbol on the page, then, with it selected, go to Library > Chord Symbol Kerning Pairs. Double click on this bit:
Click OK at the bottom right and you should find that the chord symbol on the page reflects whatever change you’ve made.
I’m sorry that I can’t offer you a more permanent fix at this juncture, but the next time we update the Scoring Express templates I’ll make sure this gets fixed.
