Hi there ,can any body tell me through experience, how does spectralayers compare up to the stem separation feature in Cubase 15 or even how does it compare up to moises , it’s the quality in sound of the audio results I’m more interested in.
The stem separation in CB15 although useful is fairly basic when compared to SL. In SL you can separate more stems at a higher quality, but also you can remove background noises from the individual stems, and clear up audio content to give greater separation and clarity. Have a look at some YouTube videos - after an hour or so of watching I’ve managed to re-mix and enhance some older recordings that I did some 20 years ago when the recording technology wasn’t as advanced as it is now. The quality is beyond comparable!
Spectralayers pro is significantly better in quality.
Thank you for your reply emavdave ,that is exactly what I am interested in doing at the moment, old 4 trk recordings mixed down to stereo recordings and live recordings of bands I have been in over the years ,sounds like fun attempting to remix them in Cubase and then see what else there is to dable with .I’ve have purchased Spectralayers now anyway so, but I think I’m going to have to upgrade my PC now which will be an headache getting the correct spec for spectralayers layers to perform smoothly.any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Thanks for your reply glennloopez
if you use high quality on spectralayers will use longer for slower computers.. but the good thing is once it is done it is done and do not really require extra cpu once the stems are made
My main Cubase PC still has Cubase pro 9.5 on windows 7.i have lots of projects on that PC so I won’t be attempting to put spectralayers or Cubase 15 on it . I have a newish smaller PC with Windows 11 on but it has only 4gig of ram and is very basic ,I decided to try out Cubase 15 because I liked the idea of the stem separation so Ive upgraded to Cubase 15 and got interested in the idea of spectralayers as well ,i tried out the demo and just to separate the drums from unmix song took over an hour on the smaller pc and crashed when I tried to unmix a song with just 3 instruments and a vocal ,so I’m going to the local computer shop tomorrow ,and see what I can pick up .I’ll show them what steinberg are recommending, hopefully i won’t end up splashing out too much money.
i guess there are plenty threads for successful pc builds on this forum. personally I did switch to mac recently, but the last years I have buildt computers for music friends and myself. I had success with the newer AMD Ryzen cpu´s on Asus motherboards. pc ofcourse have many options and the bugdet will decide more than anything. good luck
Thanks for your reply, thanks for your good luck I will need it ,computer brands and what are good things to use is something I’m not very knowledgeable at ,I haven’t had to update my PC for 15 years or so it has been good running Cubase and still does but it’s time for an update. I don’t want to be spending more than £500 .
Hi Firestamper - have a look at Hoxton Refurbished Computers. You should get a fairly recent spec Mac with a 12 month warranty that will run both CB15 and SL12. I’d look. for 16gb memory and 512gb of storage as a minimum. I have a MacBook Pro with an M2 processor with the 16gb & 512GB and it runs fine (although it is my back up, I use it a lot when working away from my main computer). Back to my original response, I’ve just remixed and cleaned up an album recorded around 1998 - using SL12 I stripped the stems out, removed some background noises, and track bleed from the original recording, imported into CB15 where I just EQ’d them. No re-recording the drums, no double tracking, just straight forward EQ (with a bit of thickening of the vocals). Can’t believe the difference. So glad I have both CB and SL as full versions.
Hi emacdave ,thanks for your reply,I got sorted out with a computer,I think I’ve probs bought the wrong one ideally for what I need ,it’s a HP omen 16l desktop gaming pc ,16gb of ram which can be increased to 32gb I think it has 6 cores and a 1 TB SSDdrive. It wasn’t what I was expecting . Gonna need a couple of docking stations for my other hard drives and a lot of reorganizing files. I had my first go at un mixing a song in spectralayers on the new PC it took 10 minutes to un pack a 4 minute song 4 piece band on a stereo file, which was a vast improvement in time to the other PC ,I wonder if i can improve the time it takes on this pc by tweeking the graphics and maybe upping the ram to 32 GB but still ,yes there are some annoying artifacts especially on cymbals but anyway Im looking forward to revisiting old stereo recordings and doing some restoration jobs on recordings that may be worth it .all the best.
