Dear friends, in a 12/8 - bar (4 dotted quarters) I want to write (automatically) the rests as dotted- eighth - rest (and not as 1/8 - rest + 1/16 - rest; see pic). How I have to write the time signature?
You can also get this behavior for free, if you don’t want to change global options, by using a time sig of [3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3]/16
In order to make this look as you want in 12/8 I invoked force duration for the first rest:
…then opt/alt - click copied it to the other three. Readily doable in smaller numbers, of course, but wish I could have found a way to make it “automatic” via notation options.
Dear @charles_piano, thank you very much! I think this is the solution, but I can’t find the menu (I’m using the German version of Dorico, but I couldn’t find this menu in the English version of steinberg.help either). Where could it be?
It is Notations Options (Ctrl + Shift + N) > Rests > Compound TS.
You probably won’t have to check the 4 ones, I didn’t take time to think about which (single ?) one is relevant in this case!
The 3d one should be the one, I guess.
Thank you! But this needs a lot of time if you have more of bars with such a time signature.
@Ludger_Vollmer I just tried, this is the one:
If you select a section that has been entered with Force Duration, you can Alt-Click it anywhere (or use R), Force Duration is kept. Then you can change only the notes by using Lock Duration.
I tried that too, but it didn’t work. I want to notate a 12/8 measure as dotted eighth note notation + dotted eighth note rest, etc. I don’t think there’s a global option for that, and the solution is to write a 24/16 TS, as you suggested, and then hide it later.
Indeed, I was just saying that with 24/16, the 3d option is enough to get what you wish (because in my example it looked like I was speaking about 4 options).
