Spitfire issues with Dorico 6

Recently purchased Spitfire ‘Originals’, and can’t figure things out. I am admittedly much more on the notation software end of the spectrum than the audio end. I have searched and viewed videos and tutorials I have found here and on Spitfire, but end result is no sound. As far as I can deduce, an issue is that when I get to the point where I’ve selected the ‘E’ and the window comes up with Spitfire Audio, it says, “No presets selected” and there is nothing in the dropdown menu. Not very computer savvy, but maybe the Spitfire libraries are installed in a place where Dorico can’t find them? Help….?

Hi @RMH, I have no problem using Spitfire Originals libraries with Dorico. Are you able to load the Originals plugin into a DAW (Logic or Cubase for example)?

Can you upload a screenshot (or a short screen video capture) that shows the plugin loaded in Dorico (clicking on the E)?

If a little red light shows in the plugin and no patches are choosable you need possibly to relocate or even repair your Originals libraries from the Spitfire Audio app.

Thank you very much for your help. I don’t use Logic or Cubase - like I said, mostly the notation side of Dorico. Here is a screen shot of where I seem to get stuck or have something wrong. The need to relocate (or repair) my Spitfire stuff is probably it, but I don’t know where I should move things. I just ran the installers when I got the libraries.

In the Spitfire Audio application relocate means that you can point it to the folder where the library is. For example: if it’s in Sounds > Spitfire Originals xxx, point it to the Sounds folder. However, repair checks for activation from Spitfire servers and too many repairs will fill that quota in which case you have to reach out to Spitfire customer support in order to reset the allocation.

The red esclamation mark confirms that the problem is on the plugin side (not in Dorico).
To relocate you don’t need to move your library, but in the SA app you tell it where your library currently lives.

Thank you both. Not sure I did anything other than run the Spitfire Audio application, but it seems to have worked.

My next question is that I am using a recent woodwind quintet file to figure this out. I can set each instrument to Woodwinds/Live, but when I try to put the horn on Brass/Live it changes all of the woodwinds, and when I return them to ww’s it changes the horn.

Since the Originals plugin is not multitimbral, you need to load a new different plugin (in the VST and Midi panel) for each channel, and assign then them to the different tracks/channels.
Make sure that each plugin has its own channel assigned in the Track Inspector (this also makes possible to choose different patches for the different tracks). Since the Originals plugin is not multitimbral, you need to load a new different plugin (in the VST a Midi panel) for each channel, and assign then them to the different tracks/channels.
I hope that what I wrote is correct and understandable…

That makes sense, and I had wondered about that. I guess I need to start looking for a sound library with individual instruments…

Not necessarily. There are many libraries where you would load a separate VST instance for each instrument. This is perfectly normal. It can take a bit of effort to set it up, but you can save the it as a Playback Template so it will load everything for new projects. Have a look at the tutorial series on Playback to learn more.

Thank you all. I did get it done for a woodwind quintet. I think what I was getting wrong was, as Janus mentioned, not setting up a separate VST instrument before going in and doing the stuff under track inspector.

By the way, this was with the free level of BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Now I just need to get my horn player to not play so loud…

Next issue. Working on a full concert band score, and while I have been able to get sounds where I want them, none of the dynamics play. Tempo changes happen, but no dynamics at all.

Which library did you use? Did you create/assign a correct configured expression map for each channel?

What happens if you assign the Auto playback Template? Also no dynamics?

(I think it would be better if you create a new thread for this issue, since this is a different topic; and possibly rename this current thread specifying the issue in the title, so that other users can find it in the search)

Thanks. I have created a new thread. Auto playback eliminated all of my instrument assignments (was worried about that, so I made sure I was able to revert).
