Hi everyone - If I have multi-measure rests on in layout options, is the only way to split a multi-measure rest to have 4 bars of whole-rests is to put a split in every single bar?
Now that I’m getting better at Dorico (and I really love it!) I finally realized that the split is a system attached item affecting just one spot, and selecting a multi-measure rest to split it does nothing.
And then if I want to do it in a specific part, not score wide, then I need to put a staff attached text space in each measure? And why can’t you go to galley view in a part (so that you could add the text in the part directly, rather than having to go back to the score or toggling multi-bar rests off)?
Please add me to a list of ex-finale users who would love to be able to select measures of rest and turn them into multi-bar rests and select multi-bar rests and split them.
You can go to galley view in the part – but it will still respect the multi-bar rest setting, so that won’t help you.
Do you know about the Counterpart Layout command – mapped by default to W? If you select something in a part layout and press W, Dorico will switch to the score layout with the same item highlighted (and vice versa if you select something in a staff in the full score and press W). That makes it easy to jump back and forth between layouts.
Just curious: Why do you want 4 bars of whole rests instead of a multi-rest?
For some reason going to Galley View in the part is greyed out. I’ll mess around with that, if there’s something I’ve got wrong as I’d like to be able to do that. And I didn’t know the W command. Going to use that for sure - thanks!!
It’s just a personal preference thing - I like the look of 4 bars of whole rests for an intro or interlude when I want next section to start on the next line. I think it looks better than a 4 bar multi bar rest on its own line.
And I always prefer whole rests to a multi bar rest when it’s fewer than 4 bars. I’m not in front of Dorico - Can’t remember if you can set a minimum number of bars for a multi bar rest but I’m hoping that option is there or would like it if it’s not. (I’m pretty sure there’s a maximum number?)
One could put a cue in those four empty measures to keep them from collapsing and likely do the players a favor by helping them get into the feel of the music right off.
That would a great! In this case it was rhythm section with slashes and chords so it won’t work. But I’m definitely using that. I love how easy cues are in dorico.
