Splitting a whole rest into four quarter rests

I’m doing this…..

  1. Set the caret at the start of the measure.

  2. Hit O to turn on Force Duration.

  3. Hit , to turn on Rest Entry.

  4. Hit 6 to set the rhythmic value to a quarter/crotchet.

  5. Hit Y to enter the rest.

But it doesn’t work. It still shows a whole rest.

Silly question: Are you sure that the caret is active?

Otherwise, your steps sound correct to me.

I double checked. Yes it is.

Is it a drum set/percussion kit, maybe?

In which case you can use this kind of workaround:

It is not.

Strange, then… What’s exactly hapening when you press Y, does the cursor move ahead? Is the behaviour the same in any bar/any staff of your project?

Could you send the project, or at least some screenshots?

This might help… It is a single percussion line.

It apparently behaves like a kit… Have you tried this?

It looks like a kit, displayed as single line instruments. When I start a new document with a kit, the steps that @charles_piano gives work for me. In case it’s not clear from his video:

  • Enter a quarter note, which then creates quarter and half note rests after it
  • Select the quarter note rest on beat 2 and press O to force its duration
  • Alt/Opt+click on beat 3 (or just press R) to duplicate the rest to beat 3
  • Select the quarter note on beat 1 and delete it

I finally got it to work. The only exception was when I try to delete the court note on the one, it turned it into a half rest. But I can divide a half rest into 2/4 notes. Thanks to both of you!

Well, not if you have a forced duration quarter rest on beat 2 – it can’t combine with an implicit rest.
