For those who switched to Cubase 15, could you please share your user feedback ? I mean, essentially about stability, workflow, and… stability again, compared with C14…
Otherwise I only see the Last Touched automation, UltraShaper and Pitch Shifter that I could appreciate and maybe the new HUB. What about the new HUB ?
If this thread gives you an idea about the stability
They’re working on it though! Hopefully it’ll be fixed with the next maintenance update. I personally wouldn’t upgrade until this issue is fixed, assuming you use MIDI Remote.
It’s really not much different from Cubase 14 for me in those respects. In fact, I was in the late stages of finishing a recording in Cubase 14 when I upgraded, and I just kept on going with Cubase 15 to finish the project in time for the deadline that afternoon or the next day (I don’t remember which).
I definitely wouldn’t say it’s any major upgrade for me personally. The horizontal scrolling change (or possible change since it’s an option) is an improvement, and I have actually found Omnivocal useful for scratch vocals during the arranging process (where I’ll record my real vocals later on), but most of highlight new features don’t really do anything for me in my workflow.
As far as being satisfied, yes, I’m satisfied in the sense that I like to stick with the latest version of my primary DAW, and nothing new got broken during the upgrade.
The ability to change the color of the interface and elements in preferences was dumbed down in 15 to the point of being unusable for me. So, the update was a waste of money. The biggest issue, though, is that this is the development future of the program. To depricate features until it becomes more “user friendly”. I’ll be using 14 until the wheels fall off, or I find something to replace it.
I appreciate the work that has gone into updating the Pro Hub, what is missing for me is the ability to add a project comment, only really relevant to the hub display, but a place to keep notes that are immediately visible (or via a mouse over) while browsing. This would help greatly in the management of projects. Also I have noticed that changing the name of a ‘Recent project’ is not immediately reflected in the ‘Cubase Projects’ list until the hub is restarted. The old project name still visible but understandably not accessible.
Yes, it’s adding more information and access. The old one was just a list of files, which you could have accessed from the file browser,. As I mentioned a user maintained comment would allow pertinent summaries to be added. It is going in the right direction. Although some auto generated info, such a number of tracks, length etc could also be useful if the developers consider it useful too.
This is exactly why I wanted to have user feedback. I can’t even imagine saying that I will pass and not using C15 untill they make it better… I would rather like not buying it or be reimbursed in that case
In my opinion, your best option is to simply download the trial and and use it yourself. Like anywhere else, users here have wildly different opinions and skill levels which will “color” their responses. Taking into account user input for verifiable technical operations is one thing, but making any manner of value judgment based on other users’ musings isn’t the best strategy.
You know that you can easily demo C15 for 60 days? That would be the best thing to do before buying anyway, and probably much better than relying on opinions of other users, as everyone’s workflow is different, and so will their experience and judgment on C15…
Indeed, I had forgotten about the trial… but honestly, I don’t want to try it only to see if it gets clunky or not. That is why I asked for feedback mostly regarding Stability.
When it comes to other manufacturer, I never try. Because I don’t have to. If you already know the soft and you like it, you most often update without thinking or going on forum to see if the thing is stable. Reaper users knows what I am talking about.
I only do this with Steinberg when updates and new versions are released. And for good reasons.
As I already said in other post, I have seen so many frustration of people getting their work ruined because of a Cubase update which is supposed to fix bugs but in fact make it worse…
So yes, everyone’s workflow is different but regarding stability, even if we don’t share the same hardware material, it is obvious that many issues related to bugs are common.
And don’t get me wrong, I like Cubase… but it can also disappoints me as much as I like it…
For me, Cubase is this weird love hate relationship. While some workflow features make perfect sense and are very intuitive, other basic features are either tied to Pro only (like Expression Maps, MIDI Remote API and PLE for example) or the workarounds to make those things work are so convoluted that you just give up because it’s not even gonna solve your problem. And that’s when such features even exist to begin with.
Stability wise is hard to say. Cubase certainly used to be more stable for me in the past and didn’t have intermittent issues or issues that plague a large amount of the user base (like issues with MIDI Remote and its API that haven’t been solved since version 13) but not you though it could be just a matter of time before they happen to you.
Old stuff is as stable as it was in C15. New stuff (not plugins): I feel like the new addons since C14, the more I use them, the more crashes I got. This is why I’m avoiding them, mainly Drum Track. Nothing confirmed by the long repetitive tests. Maybe it’s just bad luck or a coincidence. Don’t take my word for it, it’s just my experience.
Workflow:
I bought this update hoping for a workflow enhancements like eg. volume and pan on the tracks directly. To be honest, I don’t use any of that. The old habits and muscle memory are so strong that I use C15 the same as I was using C14.
New Melodic Pattern/Event: I’m so fast with midi editor that I see the melodic pattern as a gimmick. There are some YT videos showing how to use it and when I see what people do with it, I feel like I’m loosing my braincells I can do all of that in midi editor and faster. I also do electronic music never needed randomisation or not seeing notes out of scale to be creative.
UltraShaper: very, very nice compressor. Those auto attack/release and transient “shaper” are great - it’s good to read manual and experiment because it’s not the same as the envelope shaper plugin.
Pitch Shift plugin: I love it. It’s the best sounding pitch shift plugin that I have. Already using it to transform vocals and other instruments, eg. adding missing high frequency by generating an octave higher. I’m really impressed with this one.
I’m glad that those two plugins are not as CPU heavy like their delay and reverb that they added in C14 (unusable for me).
HUB: I like it. It needs a moment to get used to it but so far so good.
Beta vocal plugin: I’m not installing beta software. I’m too old to be a beta tester for free
I don’t even remember any other improvements but tbh if I wouldn’t update, I wouldn’t feel much difference. I’m half regretting updating it. Good to have but not as impressive update as I thought it will be.
