Staff spacing inconsistency

I’ve attached a project that I’m having some issues with. It only contains the tuba material. In the Tuba layout, it appears to have inconsistent minimum gaps between systems.

e.g. between the first two systems of page 1, the first two systems of page 2, the last two systems of page 2… hopefully it is quite obvious?

I can’t seem to find the optimal vertical spacing setting to avoid having to manually drag staves in each layout. Also, the Frame Fullness Indicator of the first two pages are at 128% and 117% which might indicate that the “circular calculation of how many systems can fit on a page” is responsible?

You values are ok. Especially for tuba, where notes can get very far away from the system, it is sometimes impossible to get consistant spacing. Either you need large values for systems where there are low notes with accents and a dynamic marking (and in your case a rehearsal mark in the system below), or you need low values for systems where notes are closer to the system and there is no dynamic.

I also now and then struggle with tuba parts, but they are the exception to the rule.

You could try to change music spacing here and there or move a bar to another system in order to solve the collision between the dynamic marking in the top system and the rehearsal mark in the next system. This will allow Dorico do put the systems closer together.

Thanks for the input @Estigy. I had a feeling I might get this type of solution.

Try this:

Layout Options > Vertical Spacing > Inter-system gap - set to 14 spaces.
Then, in Engrave mode, Engrave > Staff Spacing > Reset Layout (I found it sometimes needed to be done twice).

Also, you might want to move rehearsal figure 10 down a bit in Engrave mode along with the Double time indication.
In bar 42, I would drag the mf to be in front of the notes (rather than underneath) and then move the cresc. up out of the way of rehearsal figure 56.

Thanks for the help @StevenJones01

@DanielMuzMurray
I found your settings for Minimum inter-system gap with content on 10. Try the default of 2. Also I resetted the vertical spacing overrides that you had in page 2 (engrave mode).
For me it gave immediately a better result [EDIT: only in page 2 :pensive: ][Edit 2:for first and second staff in page 1 I found that prolonging the Hairpin till the f solves the vertical spacing]

…and maybe set a system break on bar 56 (too many vertical things happening).
