It often happens that I want to open Dorico just to scribble in some quick ideas.
Unfortunately, the audio engine initialization issue, with its sequence of error messages, makes this use as an immediately accessible notepad impossible.
Is there a way to launch Dorico without audio engine? Maybe, by keeping a modifier key pressed?
To access this preference page you have to first launch Dorico. What I’m looking for is something that you can choose while launching it. A momentary switch.
What kind of error does the audio engine give? I’m wondering if you are running into a user permission issue, because with especially new Mac installations sometimes the folder permissions for process ”everyone” is set to ”No access”, which prevents applications to write any changes to folders. I can explain this futher, if needed to.
The usual one that has plagued Dorico since forever: reading plugins takes longer than expected, and the audio engine asks if you want to continue waiting, or quit and save a report.
To get around this, go to your Macintosh HD → Library → Audio → Plug-ins folder and create two folders: VST (Unused) and VST3 (Unused). Move your plugins except for Steinberg folder to those ”Unused” folders and then start Dorico.
Afterwards move the plugins back to the actual folders. This way you can move some plugins in and out of the VST and VST3 folders to isolate the problem and see which plugin creates the culprit.
This “usually” only happens if you’ve got hundreds of third-party VSTs, particularly those which need a dongle present, or need user input at launch. Some plug-ins are particularly troublesome, such as WAVE…?
Are you on the latest version of Dorico? There have been improvements in loading and caching plug-ins, and in dealing with the audio engine if it has hung or crashed.
A recent Diagnostic Report might also be useful for the team.
Yes, I’m using Dorico in the same machine I use for music production, so I’ve a high number of plugins installed. Most, if not all, of them are protected in some way.
Sent. Let’s see if there is something specific in my setup. Thank you!
Hi @Paolo_T , thanks for the data, a first quick look revealed that you do have over 300 plug-ins but the sanning of them takes less than half a second, so that is not the issue here.
In older log files though I do see gaps in the log time stamps of something like 20 sec where I have no idea what the audio engine is doing during that time.
So we need to investigate further on this.
The next time Dorico takes a long time to start up and pops up with that warning message, please immediately create a new diagnostic report and send me.
Thanks a lot
