Absolute newbie here!
My band director would like me to create parts for a piece where she has cut the first 32 measures. She wants to keep the "old"numbers, so the first bar would have to be numbered “33”. How do I do this?
Also, I’d like to show the bar numbers in boxes above the staff, but only every 8 bars (usually). But sometimes at a different intervals.

You can get the first bar to be numbered as 33 by adding a bar number change at the beginning of the piece, selecting the Type as Primary and setting the number to 33. Here’s the section in the manual.
For bar numbers in boxes above the staff, it sounds like you probably want bar numbers as rehearsal marks. Go to Library > Engraving Options > Rehearsal Marks and set the sequence type to Bar Numbers. Then select a barline over which you want one of these marks to appear and type Shift+A.
