Steinberg Activation Manager - not working at all

With the Finder open, press cmd-shift-G. That will bring up a prompt and then type the path ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Activation Manager (with the tilde!) in there. (macOS hides all the Library directories which makes this more complicated than it would ideally be.) Then if you could zip up the Logs directory within that, and post it here, I can take a look. Or even just zip up the whole Activation Manager directory.

Don’t worry about the “Local Network” thing - probably that is Sequoia-only. (I don’t have a Mac running Ventura to compare with, and I can’t remember exactly what’s in each version.)

K - thanks for those detailed instructions - I found the hidden library, made the zip file for you - here it is:
Logs.zip (1.2 MB)

Could you try reinstalling SAM again, but this time could you delete the existing “Steinberg Activation Manager” app from your Applications directory before you re-run the installer? I’m not sure that will definitely fix things, but it might be worth trying while I read these logs a bit more…

YAY! it’s a Christmas miracle!!

As you instructed, I deleted the old SAM, then reinstalled it afresh. Voila - inside of one minute, everything pulled up properly, and I was able to activate Dorico 5 Pro. Dorico 4 Elements still opens properly as well.

This one-minute operation ends this 7 hour ordeal. Thanks so much Richard for your expert help!

I assume it’s OK to keep both 4 and 5 on my system? Or do you recommend against that?

Also - I see there’s still a “Steinberg / OSX” folder in my Downloads folder, containing subfolders for:

Dorico 4 Version History
Dorico 4 and 5 Application Installers
Groove Agent…
Halion Sonic
Halion Symphonic Orchestra
Iconica Sketch
Indian Drum Basics
Jazz Essential
Olympus Choir Micro
Sound Content Update

Should I keep/ move that folder somewhere? I see that Dorico 4 and Dorico 5 both are already in my Applications folder - so I’m not sure what this other “Steinberg/OSX” folder is, if I should keep it, and if so, where.

Thanks again for your help with the SAM issue!

Great news!

To answer your questions:

i) Having Dorico 4 and Dorico 5 both on your computer is absolutely fine. You can’t run them both at the exact same time, because they will compete for control of the audio hardware, but having them both available is no problem. In fact your Dorico Pro 5 licence should now allow you to run Dorico 4 as Pro rather than Elements.

ii) The Steinberg/OSX folder in Downloads is where the Steinberg Download Assistant stores the installer files it has downloaded, prior to running them. Once they’ve been installed you don’t actually need those files any more, but equally there’s no harm leaving them there unless you need to reclaim the disk space.

OK awesome. Thanks so much. I’ll have family at the house to celebrate Christmas in just a few minutes, and then performing a Christmas gig in about 2 hours. So I’m so so grateful for the help and info you’ve provided. Now the holiday can be “Joy to the World” indeed! (PS - family just rang the bell, haha. Nothing like a last-possible-second solution!)

Really happy! Now Christmas!

Hey Richard! I’m also having issues with SAM and licensing. I own Dorico Pro 5, but have to install 4 due to being on an 'ol Mac Pro that’s running 10.14.6 Mojave.

I followed your previous instructions, have deleted the initial version of SAM, and have reinstalled it. Same issue occurs. I’ve attached the “Activation Manager Logs” as well as a screen shot of what I’m experiencing. I’m clicking the “sign in” button, and nothing is happening in SAM or in my browser. I’ve even opened a browser page separately and signed into my account through the browser before launching SAM. Any thoughts?

I look forward to hearing your response. Thanks a bunch!

I suspect the problem here is because Apple no longer update the security certificates on macOS 10.14, so it doesn’t recognise the new certificates on some of our servers. Could you try following the steps here: https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/23335161905682-macOS-Steinberg-Activation-Manager-inoperable-Steinberg-Hub-doesn-t-show-current-content

Excellent! Thanks so much for your help. I was able to activate Dorico 5 Pro, and launch Dorico 4. Quick question…is it possible for me to move all of my .vstsound instruments to an external drive, and still use them with Dorico? I currently have some on my internal drive, and some on an external drive. I’d love for all of them to be on an external drive, and can’t seem to figure out how to get them to play. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The best way to do this is to use the Steinberg Library Manager, which is a separate app that will already be installed, and which allows for installation and relocation of Steinberg sample data. Within that you can select one or more content packages and then click on “Move”.
