Steinberg Download Assistant fails to download anything

I’m getting continual Download Assistant errors and failures too. Can you please help me?

I’ve followed all of the directions I’ve been given on the support pages, including the installation of:

  • eLicenserControlSetup.exe
  • MediaBay_Installer_win64.zip
  • Steinberg_Activation_Manager_Installer_win.zip
  • Steinberg_built_in_ASIO_Driver_1.0.9_Installer_win64.zip
  • Steinberg_Download_Assistant_1.36.4_Installer_win.exe
  • Steinberg_Install_Assistant_Installer_win.exe
  • Steinberg_Library_Manager_win64.zip

Each application reported a successful installation or update. After multiple restarts, the Steinberg Download Assistant still fails.

I’d prefer not to download the source files linked above directly, as I can see additional components displayed in the Download Assistant that I want, such as “Jazz Essentials.”

I’m running Windows 11 and my PC meets all requirements.

May I please have your assistance? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, @Gary_Badger. I’m sorry you’re experiencing problems with SDA.

My guess is that for whatever reason, the Aria2 component that SDA uses to download is unable to operate on your system. Can you please find SDA’s log files, zip them up and attach them here? Hopefully they will contain a clue.

In Windows Explorer, please go to:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Steinberg Download Assistant\Logs

and zip up all of the files contained within, then attach the resulting zip file here.

Thanks very much for your response. Here are the logs.
SDA Logs.zip (97.6 KB)
I appreciate your assistance.

Thanks, Gary. The logs show a number of errors:

Network problem has occurred. cause:A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network.

So there’s something about the network configuration on your computer that is causing Aria2 to fail to make a connection to our content delivery network. Do you have a firewall or proxy server set up on your computer that could be getting in the way?

Yes, I’m using Norton 360 which includes a firewall but not a proxy.
Is there a specific port I need to open to let it through? Or (somehow) give the program special permissions?

This isn’t something that I need to do for any other programs - even a BitTorrent client.

Thanks.

I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the Aria2 downloader myself, but a quick look at its documentation shows:

The port numbers that aria2 uses by default are 6881-6999 for TCP and UDP.

So you could try opening those ports for both TCP and UDP in Norton 360.

Interestingly, the default ports for BitTorrent are the same as those use by Aria2 (though BT can be configured to use other ports, such as those for http. And indeed, any nefarious traffic is likely to hijack a port that you’re using for something else, thus rendering Norton’s firewall minimally useful.)

Thank you for your help.

I’ve enabled Aria2 to pass through the Norton firewall but the problem remains.

If you temporarily disable Norton 360’s firewall/filtering features altogether, does that allow SDA to download anything?

That was an excellent suggestion. I completely disabled the firewall and filtering but the problem persists. This alert appears for each item in the queue. Also, when I try to update the items for the other Steinberg product Cubase AI 11.

Now that you’ve given this a try, could you make a fresh zip of the logs from the same location, and attach them here?
