My name is Marc and new on the forum here. So, I will introduce myself first. Do you not want to read all of it? I made separate parts. If you do read all of it, you will find I do not take myself too seriously, but the emotions are real. I am truly bewildered at waht is happening today.
1 – Introduction
2 – the hell I went thru installing Wavelab and trying to make it work.
3 – review Steinberg.
4 – Question
I have been a hobby DJ in the Netherlands from 1982 going semiprofessional from 1987 till 2012. I have always been an old-school all-round DJ. When I was resident DJ at a party café, I also wanted to be a Club DJ, and vice versa so I did both. It delivered more than enough gigs to make a living but never the status of the big Dutch DJ names. With the upcoming of EDM, telephone screen requests and “don’t you have internet and YouTube to play my song” (which were really bad 99 out of 100 times) I got so tired with the daft mentality of the audience and those stupid pioneer mixers popping up everywhere that I decided to quit, It was quite the shock for the people in my direct environment as they allI’ve expected me to die behind “the wheels of steel”.
12 years have passed, and nowadays I get more and more requests to get out of retirement. there is a demand for the old type DJ’s that still can run a turntable, and Back to the ‘seventies, ‘eighties, ‘nineties are a thing in the Netherlands.
Now back in the day in the early 2000’s I started to digitalize my music and for this I used Wavelab (I think 4). Never any glitches or hick-ups, it just worked and did everything I wanted. I could make all my music sound the same, whether an old disco song for the seventies or a deep house song from that era, It was great.
But as requests have risen to get out of retirement, I am doing a bit of investigation. As it will mostly be seventies and nineties, I want to equalize my music again, so I looked for Wavelab again.
Now to download Wavelab, Steinberg pushes you to use the download assistant, a program that just does not work, out of my own experience and topics here on the form.
Installing download assistant → ERROR
Please download and install software parts separately and manually.
Done, at least now download assistant opens and seems to work.
Ok download Wavelab → Error Version history failed.
Forget about the version history, I do not care, install Wavelab 12.
Retrieving. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more.
Now I am starting to get really annoyed. Restart computer.
Download Wavelab again-> Error Version history failed.
Forget about the version history, I do not care, install Wavelab 12.
Downloading → Error installing Asio driver.
Now I start to swear. Can’t I not just download Wavelab 12 without this stupid non-functioning download assistant? (de-installs complete download assistant.)
Restart computer, finding Wavelab 12 somewhere on the Steinberg website. Downloading and installing went without any problem – HALLELUJAH!
The blood starts warming up again. I open a song with high expectation and press play.
The music sounds like the speakers are underwater and the phasing effect is on during the complete song.
Are you kidding me? Starts up old trusty Winamp (Yes, I know, I am an old fart). The music still sounds like crap.
Lets not repeat what I said. I restarted my computer, and to my relief everything is fine as soon as I try Wavelab again sound is messed up again and I must restart my computer to fix it again.
Ok, let’s see what the Steinberg support has to say → Too many requests.
Again → Too many requests. And again → Too many requests.
Cleaning the internet browser and restarts computer again. Startup Winamp → Music OK. Open Steinberg website, Click on Steinberg Support. → Too many requests.
SERIOUSLY???
Startup CCleaner professional and find the Asio driver. Revive → cannot find pathqw5987er9q8w6r89qrwyet6qwqw-e987reqw978qwr-9q87wet-98q7wett-9q87whatever
Ok. DELETE!
Opening Winamp again. Music OK → Sigh of relief.
Opening Wavelab again, but as I was expecting there is no connection now between Wavelab and the build in soundcard drivers… I am not giving up….yet.
Close my browser. Erasing cookies browser history and catch again. Startup CCleaner and let it clean my computer until everything is erased that should not be on the computer. Start up my computer again.
Opening Steinberg website. Press support ???It works???
Ok, retrieving information, see horrifying tips that they themselves do not find a good thing to do as these tips can seriously crash windows. We are not going to do that. There was a time that we had a good functioning System recovery build in Windows, but those days are gone.
I just need the Asio driver. Is it to be found anywhere? Yes, but after some digging.
Ok download and install Audio driver. Successfully installed. (I am falling out of my chair in pure amazement).
Do I dare…… is it wise…. To start up Wavelab??? See what it does???
Start up Wavelab. All the connections to the built-in soundcard light up.
Can it be my lucky day???
Expectantly presses play after loading a song.
Music sounds ……. like the speakers are underwater and the phasing effect is on during the complete song.
How, Steinberg? How can you force people to use a “download assistant” that does not work! How is it impossible to download Wavelab via the “download assistant,” but when you invest time to find a direct version of Wavelab (what is an achievement in the mess that the Steinberg website is), it downloads and installs perfectly. Why do you get error messages about the Asus driver, but when you invest time to find a direct version of the Asus driver it installs perfectly. Next to the problems trying to find answers and not getting them because “too many requests” I’m starting to wonder if Steinberg has a discouragement policy so that the least amount of people buy their software.
At first, I wanted to ask if anybody had any Idea how to fix the problem with the Sound, but I fixed it myself. The soundcard was set to the internal Microphone, so the music was playing via the build in microphones in my in ears. (yes, I know not the way to edit music but for testing purposes it is fine).
I have another problem now. With Wavelab 4 VST-Plugins were pre-installed. Now it seems you have to install them one by one? That shouldn’t be a problem but there are literary hundreds of Plug-ins in hundreds of maps all over the PC and as it seems to me that Wavelab can only read the maps where the plugins are actually in it, good luck finding the right plug-ins. I specified folders with absolutely no effect whatsoever. All the maps seem to be empty and if not, they seem to be Plug-ins that do not work or install in Wavelab. Curve-EQ did install and as soon as I tried it, Wavelab crashed.
So I am really at a total loss here, what is going on and why Wavelab is giving me such a tough time. The only reason I am still here is due to my past experiences with Wavelab 4. I loved that version. This version seemingly only wants to give me headaches, so if anybody has any suggestion, I am all ears.
