I am a bit puzzled about the response from Steinberg, according to Martin.
The changing of the licensing system is a special occurrence. The old system ran for some 20 years.
I’d expect it would be a smart business decision to be more forthcoming to customers who have the situation that @martinnnyp found themselves in.
In my opinion it is not so much about whose fault is it that the current situation arose but rather how to proceed from here.

I still use Windows XP on some of my machines because I rely on vintage gear that only works properly with older software like Cubase 4 — which I still use regularly. At some point, I will need a way to activate this software again. Steinberg should offer a new method of activation for these legacy products. Just yesterday, I was able to activate ABBYY FineReader 7 without any issues. I maintain several legacy operating systems and software setups that still run and activate flawlessly. Can you provide examples of other software that is not possible to activate because its too old ?

Yeah, you reminded me why I moved to Blackmagic and Silkypix.
Another is Native Instruments - when they switched to their latest system they turned the old one off. I have projects that use Kontakt 5. Even though I have the licences, and can use the libraries in 6 onwards, none of those old projects load properly, and ALL the Kontakt tracks have to be reconstructed.
And Windows XP only ‘activates’ because it just uses a serial number like Win95/98. Wait until MS starts turning off the activation servers for Win 7/8 (if they haven’t already) and you have to set up your own MAK server at home lol..
I thought Steinberg had made it possible to move a software license to the eLicenser last year?

All my old Steinberg works fine…as long as you have the eLicenser plugged in. I have old and new so both licensing…as long as your OS supports the eLicensing software you can run it as long as you want. You don’t need the eLicenser server to run your software.
I honestly thought Steinberg had made it possible for people to move their old licenses from software eLicenser to an actual eLicenser.
That was possible for as long as I can remember with the eLicenser system.
Yep and they reminded everyone with soft licenses many times, this is your best bet forward for use after the server turns off..
if you were paid for the amount of hours responding here you would have already the 50 bucks to install the latest cubase … i would understand if they said you have to pay the full amount of a virgin cubase install and then even then … if you don’t have 50 bucks for a hobby that is saddening ….
