Steinberg Library Manager privileged helper has wrong version (-1.-1)

Hi guys,

I updated Dorico 6 several times previously without any issues on Mac Mini 27.0.1 . But with the current update to 6.2.31 I’ve started to have the below error

Steinberg Library Manager privileged helper has wrong version (-1.-1).
Failed to establish privileged helper!

I uninstalled and re-installed the Steinberg Library Manager.

Checked that Steinberg Mefia Technilogies and enabled and running in background.

Thanks

Sergey

For a solution please have a look at this thread.

I run this command

sudo launchctl enable system/com.steinberg.HALionLibraryInstallerHelper

and can see it in the list when run

sudo launchctl list

But when running Install of HALion Sonic Factory Content I got the same error.

Reboot doesn’t help.

I also don’t understand why I didn’t get this error previously in 2026 while the mentioned thread is from 2025.

Hi @Sergeyka ,

what if you try following command instead?

sudo launchctl kickstart system/com.steinberg.HALionLibraryInstallerHelper

If you then go to the Activity Monitor, can you find in the list of processes an item called com.steinberg.HALionLibraryInstallerHelper?

If so, and if you then try to install a sound library, do you still get that error message?

I see com.steinberg.HALionLibraryInstallerHelper im the list of processes, but still got the same error when trying to install the sound library

Strange. So if that is the case then I also don’t know further and need to ask my colleague, but he is already offline and enjoys his weekend. So probably on Monday I can come back to you. Thanks for your patience.

Hi @Sergeyka ,

Just for verification: Are you running your macOS with SIP enabled? You can find this out by running the command

csrutil status

It should return:

System Integrity Protection status: enabled.

If not, please paste your output.

System Integrity Protection status: unknown (Custom Configuration).

Configuration:
Apple Internal: disabled
Kext Signing: enabled
Filesystem Protections: disabled
Debugging Restrictions: enabled
DTrace Restrictions: enabled
NVRAM Protections: enabled
BaseSystem Verification: enabled
Boot-arg Restrictions: enabled
Kernel Integrity Protections: enabled
Authenticated Root Requirement: enabled

This is what the AI search on Google brought up. Does that might help you?

"Why this might still fail (Critical Steinberg Issue)

If you run that command and get a permission error, or if the Steinberg Library Manager continues to throw a “privileged helper has wrong version (-1,-1)” error, the root cause is a known macOS security conflict with Steinberg software: [1, 2]

  1. System Integrity Protection (SIP) is disabled: Steinberg’s privileged helpers require SIP to be enabled so macOS can validate their cryptographic signatures. If you turned off SIP (or are using a tool like OpenCore Legacy Patcher), launchctl will refuse to run the helper correctly.
    • The Fix: Restart into Recovery Mode, open Terminal, run csrutil enable, and reboot. [1, 2]
  2. Background Login Item is Disabled: macOS might be blocking it in the background. Go to System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions (or Allow in the Background) and make sure Steinberg Media (or anything matching HALion/SilentInstall) is toggled ON. [1, 2, 3]

If the command gives you a specific error line output (e.g., service disabled or No such process), tell me the exact text of that error so we can bypass it.

KI-Antworten können Fehler enthalten."

I saw this recommendations before. However,

  • Most of my SIP configurations are enabled
  • Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH is Running in background
  • The same configuration didn’t cause any issues previously
  • I didn’t understand which command do you mean in “If the command gives you a specific error line output”
  • During the Install I got twice a password prompt to install the Helper and the error "Steinberg Library Manager privileged helper has wrong version (-1.-1).
    Failed to establish privileged helper!"
. And at the end "Some VST Sound files could not be moved to the desired location!"
  • Does the Installer have a log where we can get more detailed information?

Hi @Sergeyka ,

your System Integrity Protection is only partially disabled, what if you switch it on again for everything, i.e. also ‘Apple Internal’ and ‘Filesystem Protections’? Or can you not run other things then on your computer?

Hi @Ulf ,

Sorry for the delay. I fully enabled SIP and after that got several errors from the Download assistant and many access permission requests from Dorico software (if I remember correctly). I selected Install Again HALion Sonic Factory Content and it passed through without the errors.

Interesting that the installation package was 1.5Gb, but I don’t see anything installed with this size in the Download Assistant list.

I still see these kits don’t using the default location and shows red triangle with ! on Move options:

  • Percussion Kit
  • Rock Kit
  • Studio Kit
  • Vintage Kit

Should I move them to the Default Location?

All this behaviour is strange taking into account I successfully processed several Dorico upgrades previously with the same MacOS configuration.

Thanks

Sergey

Hi @Sergeyka ,

first of all, the HALion Sonic factory content is not just one sound library, but comprises several ones, therefore you don’t see one 1.5 GB item.

Second, it does not matter where the contents files are located, as long as HALion Sonic knows where everything is. The Library Manager is the tool that helps on moving things in a proper way. But if the red triangle is shown, that’s not good. Therefore I’d try moving those kits to the default location, and if that is resolved move it to your wanted location.

Btw, what is shown as your default path?
