In this big band drum part I can’t get the tied 8th note stem to go up like the other cue notes, having tried all the methods I know in Dorico. What am I missing here? There’s also a collision with the repeat bar number and the tie in the cue, but I think I can fix that.
By any chance, doesn’t the eighth note belong to another voice in the original staff?
That could produce the issue you’re facing.
Hm.. didn’t think of that, thanks. I checked it tho, and it doesn’t seem to be the case: cue was from a single line alto part.
Then it’s hard to guess what’s happening… If you don’t mind to share a cutdown version of your project here (just a few bars showing the issue should be enough), I’m sure someone will be able to help you.
OK sure, here’s a few bars of it. The problem is in bar 8 - there are some hidden notes there, not sure if that has something to do with it.

It seems that it has to do with the hidden rests between your hidden notes. If you select the first hidden notes and switch off Ends Voice, the rests appear and the cue’s eighth note look right (stem up). Then you could make the rests transparent, but it’s not great in terms of horizontal spacing…
What you can do is to select the first hidden notes, and press Letter O (force duration) and 7.
Then there are no rests any more, and the cue looks right.
(At 00’04’’ I’m switching off Ends Voice, and switching it on again two seconds later)
To avoid the collision with the (8), you can select the cue and increase the distance in the Properties Panel:
I think adding a drum player just for playback, visible in Galley view, but hidden in page view, might be an easier way to work.

Guys.. many thanks for the feedback! Charles solution works for me. Jesper: the “playback player” option also seems good, but just to ask how you got the cue to attach to the measure which is in effect empty in the bar repeat region? I’ve seen a few involved workarounds for this, sure I must be missing something easier.
As an ex - Finale user I’m puzzled why Dorico seems to make this particular operation so difficult, given so many great features it now has.
You can enter a cue in a bar repeat region with the caret:
I shortened the bar repeat region with alt+shift+left arrow. Deleted the notes. The bar was empty after deleting the notes, not sure why, so I selected the rest in the previous bar and pressed r (repeat) to get a rest. Selected the rest, and Shift+U to add the cue. Then, lengthened the bar repeat region again.

I tried this on the caret in write mode note input but it just gave me the first note of the cue. Works OK out of note input on the whole bar rest. Got the picture now, thanks.
Many thanks!
That’s true: in my demo you can see that once the (small) cue is entered, I select the right handle and drag it to the right.
