Stem Direction Issue

How come when I copy and paste one part into another (say Flute into Oboe an octave lower) many of the stems are in the wrong direction? This also happens when I Explode parts into seperate staves: many of the stems are in the wrong direction. I feel sure Dorico knows what direction stems should go.

You can easily reset them:

Thanks so much for the help.

Dorico does indeed know which way the stem directions ought to go, but if you’ve imported MusicXML with the default settings at Preferences > MusicXML Import (which is on the Dorico menu on Mac or the Edit menu on Windows) it has no choice but to respect the stem directions specified in the MusicXML.

Thanks for the reply. However, this was not an imported XML file. I actually started this piece from scratch using one of the Dorico templates. I wrote the Flute part and then copied and pasted it into the Oboe staff and lowered the whole section one octave… When I did that I noticed several of the stem directions were incorrect and I had to go through and individually click each of those notes and flip the stem.

Thanks again for your help.

Personally I just do my copy/pastes, leaving them as they are (unless they really annoy me), then Reset various things before I start Engraving checks (especially if I might change things like notes, otherwise I am correcting things that might easily be deleted.)
Glad you have this sorted

I am still having problems with stem direction. Please see the Screen Shot and notice the stems in Clarinets and Trumpets right at the beginning. I tried using Edit > Notations > Stem > Remove Forced Stem but nothing happened. Some stems on middle line are going UP as you can see.

I went to the part and switched many stems manually using “F” but when I go back to the score the stems are still wrong.

Take a look at Engraving Options > Notes > Stems > Stem Directions. You may prefer the second option.

That was the issue.
Thanksa so much.
