Hi all, This is related to my problem the other day. I want Soprano 2 to sing Sustained Ahs. I have a HALion VST in VST and MIDI. I’ve chosen Sus AHs, then assigned it to Soprano 2 in the Track Inspector. When I click on “e” it says sus Ahs but the sound is still Synth Strings 1. I’ve tried this with several different VSTs in different parts but all I get is Synth 1. Any ideas? Here are the screenshots.
Click on Soprano 2, in the Track inspector you have Ch 1. Looking at Halion, it should be on Ch 4?
That did it, thank you. The question is, why?
What I mean is, by changing that, did I also change someone else’s part that I don’t know about (yet)?
Not sure if this answers your question: in the middle column is each of the instruments/singers you created in Setup. To the left is either the VST/Midi panel where you add in the various VSTs you want to use - or the Track inspector, which assigns a VST … and a (midi) Channel for the selected track.
One VST can often be used for a number (up to 16) of different sounds available from that VST library.
Your Soprano 2 needs to be set to the same channel for the sound you want it to trigger, in Halion you have it in Channel 4. If you loaded the Ahh to channel 5 instead (in Halion) then Sop 2 would need to be (in the Track inspector) set to channel 5 instead.
TIP: you can load a few sounds in Halion you want to audition for example similar sounds in (empty) channels 13, 14, 15 (as an example) then in the Track inspector for that instrument/singer, you can change from channel 13 to 14 to 15 to hear what it might sound like to decide which is the most suitable. Then delete the sounds (in Halion) you do not need, freeing up those slots for any other instrument sounds you might require, and freeing up memory as it does not need to load those sounds if no instrument is assigned to it.
Any sound can be in any slot (although drums are often (or default to) channel 10, by convention), but you can load sounds into any slot area. For example, you might like to have Strings from channel 1 to 6, just so you can find them quickly, Brass from 8 to 14, leave a gap in case you need to add a solo viola or for adding another trumpet so they are near the others.
If you do want to reorder them load them where you want them together, then match up the channel in each instrument’s Track inspector as you know how to now ![]()
Additional, as you already have, you can have multiple instances of the same VST if you need to. Some might only play one sound, others like Halion can accommodate up to 16, which is where you have to specify the midi channel for each instrument connected to that instance of Halion.
You do not disturb any other instrument/singer unless they are also using that channel in that instance of Halion. As you know, this is controlled, you can check yourself, in the Track inspector settings for each instrument/singer/stave track on the right.
Clear as mud? ![]()
(I edited for further clarification and for anyone else coming here later)
Yikes! I think that’s the answer I asked for. I’ll have to read thru it few times and try it. I’m sure it will seem simple, once I’ve figured out how it works.
Thank you,
otherwise pop back here and ask more. I or someone else can explain further.
