Still fighting with Drum Maps

I have been struggling with Drum Maps forever. I setup a new map for a kit. I cleared all of the unused pads in the kit (a tedious endeavor) and selected ‘Show Drums Sounds Used by the Instrument’. But unused pads continue to show in the track.

There should be a way in a drum map to mark pitches to show/not show.

The drum map editor is dreadfully out of date but when I open a Midi drum part the ‘Show Drum Sounds Used by Instrument’ option works for me. Wnen I select it only those pieces of kit with notes assigned to them show up.

Cubase 15 Pro and Windows 11 both up to date.

That’s a bit different than than the issue @BobUpstairs is describing. At least as I read it they only want to see the Notes which have an entry in the Drum Map regardless of if they have Notes on them. They want to see all the Notes with a sound assigned to it and only those Notes.

I was playing around with this yesterday and it does lead to pretty clunky but viable work around.

  1. Add the Drum Map to a Track
  2. Create a short ‘dummy’ MIDI Part somewhere on the timeline that isn’t part of the actual song/piece that plays. I put this at the start of my timeline where I always have 8 empty measures but I’d expect at the end would work too.
  3. Edit this Dummy Part with the Drum Editor to create a stack of Notes, one on each of the pitches which has a Drum Map entry. Mute all the Notes (optional) so you don’t hear them.
  4. Set the Editor to “Show Drum Sounds Used by Instrument” so now you only see the pitches which have Drum Map entries.
  5. Minimize this Part (so you don’t see it) but don’t Close it.
  6. Now when you Edit other Parts on that Track with the Drum Editor it will only show the Notes in the Map.

I actually do this from time to time but less comprehensively.

Sometimes I’ll play a basic drum track for a song knowing that I may add some bits (manually) later on. In those cases I’ll put some dummy notes at the start of the kit pieces that I want to add later just so they’re visible.

Hmmm… not a bad idea. My primary drum map has all kinds of percussion that I don’t use very often. I could ‘hide’ them using this approach without messing with the map.

Isn’t it much easier to use this functionality to create such a Drum Map?

That is exactly what the option ‘Show Drum Sounds In Use by Instrument’ does. Do you get a different result? Don’t forget to activate the filter.

I’ve done all those things… but there’s usually something that doesn’t come out right.

Steinberg developed a new Beat Maker but left us old guys out in the rain. Like I said at the beginning of this thread, I’ve been fighting with it forever.

But I do thank you all for your input!

I don’t get it. No matter what I do in Groove Agent I will get the proper Drum Map when I perform the aforementioned two steps. Create the Drum Map, then apply the filter. I wonder which entries you see in your Drum Map that don’t belong there.

Is it the empty lines for A0, A#0, and B0? And that is with the filter activated?

Could it maybe be that there are some unnamed but occupied pads on the Player’s side? If you switch the midi setup on the bottom of the pads panel to this configuration the Player entries should disappear from the drum map.

Well, that’s it!! I don’t use the Player side ever and didn’t think of looking there. I didn’t go to the config window you showed, but I cleared all the player pads and the map is now clean. Hallelujah!!
