Sorry if I might have missed it, but as far as I’m concerned, there’s still no “direct” method to convert (or to re-route) any existing MIDI tracks - previously meant to trigger external MIDI sound modules etc. - to internal MIDI instruments instead, correct?
And no, I’m not talking about copying any old MIDI track data over to a completely new VST track individually, and to subsequently tweak track parameters there in order to play the new internal MIDI instrument instead of the external one; I’m just looking for a simple method to “direct-convert” the type of MIDI track from a “generic one” to a “VST Instrument”, subsequently pointing to an installed plugin. That approach would save me so much time, especially when picking up very old songs I have created decades ago, for which I’d like to use my internal software libraries now instead of triggering any external sound modules (which partially don’t exist anymore).
Is there already an official Cubase procedure to do so in a very simple and efficient way (e.g. commands or macros, just changing track parameters without creating new tracks in addition)? Thanks a lot in advance for your responses.
Sorry I’m not getting it.
Any midi data outputted to trigger external (hardware) instruments can be the same midi data routed to any internal VST instrument.
Hi XLColdJ, thanks for your quick reply.
I must do something wrong.
After having created a new track with my desired VST instrument, I rerouted the output of my original “MIDI only” track to the new instrument track. So far so good. If I’m now “arming” any of these two tracks, I can already listen to the new sound while playing on my keyboard. I can also “hear” the sound correctly after opening a midi editor (list or key) and clicking on any MIDI entry. However, I don’t hear the new sound when playing back the song itself. Very strange…
Yes, the midi data are of course the same, only the target cannot be simply “changed” from an ordinary MIDI track type to an internal instrument type just like that. Exactly that’s the problem I have and I’d like to get rid of.

Well they’re different track types not just different targets so no you can’t just switch it up.
You can transfer midi to an instrument track with a macro and delete the original track but I can’t work out how to avoid the data deletion message so it still takes a few mouse clicks to ok deletion and then select an instrument.
I checked that as well. Regardless if setting the MIDI channel(s) manually (individual or to “all”), I don’t hear the sound when playing back the song; just when playing the keyboard itself. I still don’t get that. However, I will try your macro approach tomorrow. In this case it wouldn’t really bother me to confirm any deletion messages, as having a clear application feedback - before destroying any data - is anyway my preferred workflow.
