Stirring the soup in playback

On a big band arrangement I’ve written for “Our Love Is Here To Stay”, I want the drum set player to stir the soup with brushes at the beginning then switch to sticks later. The most commonly used notation for this is 4 quarter notes (often tied together) with buzz rolls for the left hand with beats 2 and 4 accented for the right hand. Two issues I’m having: 1) Dorico won’t let me tie the quarters together with buzz rolls and accents on 2 & 4, and 2) When I untie the quarters, put the buzz rolls in, and play it back it sounds like a machine gun. Is there anything I need to do in Play mode to make it sound the way it should?

For question 1: Is it something like this you want? Force duration on the notes before adding ties, and a playing technique for the accent. Another option would be slurs and regular accents.

This video, recently released, might help: https://youtu.be/Ba1doRWbDoU?si=FSe45EH5po3TCNaj

That’s exactly what I want, thanks. Now if I can just get it to not sound like a machine gun on playback…

That depends on what sound library you are using. I only have Noteperformer, so I can’t help very much, unless that’s what you are using. Noteperformer has a separate brush kit.

I actually want buzz rolls on each quarter note but I know how to do that. I just couldn’t get them tied together with accents on 2 and 4. Thanks for your help!

I have Halion, and not really happy with it. What’s the procedure for installing a better sound library on Dorico Pro 5?

Maybe this video will help.
