Strange/confusing midi problem

Hi - hope someone can help me figure this out. I’m running into an issue using a foot pedal controller as a sustain pedal for my keyboard. Here’s the setup:

Keyboard controller → USB → Cubase
FCB1010 with expression pedal setup as sustain pedal cc#64 → interface MIDI → Cubase

This works 100% perfectly when opening pianos in kontakt standalone, with midi set to Omni

In cubase it doesn’t work. I load kontakt on an instrument track with ALL MIDI INPUTS selected - it only picks up the keyboard. To get it to work, I have to create a separate MIDI track for the pedal, set BOTH instrument and MIDI tracks to receive the INTERFACE input ONLY, arm BOTH tracks for recording and it works fine.

The MIDI In Activity bar registers the pedal and the keyboard all the time, and I’ve checked with MIDI monitor. Both keyboard and pedal are set to Channel 1. This make no sense to me, at all, especially that the Kontakt instrement is responing to notes from the keyboard when the interface is selected as an input. I’m not using MIDI Thru connections on anything. What do we think is going on here?

Hi,

My expectation is, that you are using a Mackie Control remote device. Is this correct? If yes, which MIDI Port do you use as the Mackie Control Input? Please exclude this MIDI Port from the ‘All MIDI Inputs’ in the Studio Setup > MIDI Ports Setup.

Hi Martin. Thanks for the lightning fast reply!

Not using a Mackie, no. This is a CME keyboard and I HAVE linked its transport controls to Cubase as a MIDI remote. Controllers 114 thru 119 are controlling Cubases transport on channel 1. I assume they are on the same port as the keyboard itself - am not sure how to tell.

Hi,

Could you please attach a screenshot of the Studio > MIDI Ports Setup?

Well, that wasn’t the solution but it lead me to it. I feel so dumb. The interface MIDI input was not checked to be included in ALL MIDI INS. I changed that and it’s working as expected.

I forget how powerful and detailed Cubase’s settings are!
