I have one channel that will only play GM 51 Synth Strings 1. When I try to assign a different voice in HALion it still sounds the same, so I switched it to Cantai and I still get the same preset.
It’s the Emily channel. Here are the Cantai and HALion screen shots. The weird thing in the HALion box is that it says Choir Has in two places and Sustain Ah in another, but the sound coming out is still Syth Strings 1.
According to your screenshots it’s fine.
The first screen shot shows Emily playing out to Cantai at MIDI channel one, and in the second one you changed that so Emily now plays out to HALion Sonic, again to MIDI channel 1, and there in slot 1 (receiving on channel 1) is the Synth Strings 1 sound.
The only odd thing I see is, that HALion Sonic slot 3 plays out to the Main output of HALion and not to Out 3, but this is not a mistake as such, it’s just the internal HALion Sonic routing at that moment in time, you can set it up that way, though it makes not much sense, but that’s not forbidden.
Ok, so how do I change Synth 1 to Sustain Ah? I Clicked on Sus Ah, as you can see in the screen shot. I think I’m just missing something obvious about how to assign the voice.
See, HALion Sonic has on the left side 16 slots and by default they “listen” to their according MIDI channel, so slot 1 to MIDI channel 1, slot 2 to MIDI channel 2 and so on.
So you can do either in the Play window in the Track Inspector set Emily to send to MIDI channel 4 of HALion Sonic.
Or you simply select/highlight the first slot in HALion Sonic and then on the right side in the MediaBay section, click on the big All icon, where upon all available sounds get listed. Then find the Sustain Ah sound in that list, double click on it and it will get loaded into the first slot. And because Emily is set up to send to MIDI channel 1 she will trigger slot 1.
Makes sense?
The first method worked. (I tried the second too.) Ultimately, I want to render it in Cantai, but the voices still sound bad and drag behind the beat, so I switched it back to HALion so I could hear it better. Now, I’m scared to switch it back. The bottom line is that I need to learn to use the HALion window better.
